5 Easy Homemade Gift Ideas

Some years you make great money and you can be generous with gifts — other years, you just want to tell your family to write off the holidays all together. Instead of having to be scrooge when your budget is tight, here are five easy homemade gift ideas that will be much appreciated. Since it’s coming so late, they are all gifts that can be thrown together pretty quickly but that scream “I am the most thoughtful friggin’ person ever.”

Lemon Sugar Scrub: 10 minutes

Supplies:

  • 2 1/2 cups granulated sugar; divided
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil (almond oil will also work)
  • 1 lemon

Put sugar in a large bowl. Heat coconut oil in the microwave for about 30 seconds, or until the oil is melted. Pour oil over sugar and mix to combine. Zest the rind of 1 lemon and then juice the lemon. Remove any seeds from lemon juice. Add lemon juice and zest to the sugar mixture and stir to combine. Pour into a mason jar, print a label and voila! An inexpensive gift made with love.

Homemade Manicure Jar: 10 minutes

Supplies:

  • A mini manicure kit you can buy at the drugstore
  • Cotton balls
  • Nail polish

Just combine all the tools from your manicure kit in with the nail polish and cotton balls into a cute mason jar. Tie a bow and done. Great for mother-in-law/teacher/cousins/aunts etc.

Personal Framed Photo: 10 minutes

Supplies:

  • Photo stolen from Facebook or your camera phone
  • Picture frame

This is one of my favorite gifts to give – and people always love them. Go onto the recipients facebook profile and find an amazing picture of them from a recent trip or with family and friends that you know they love. Print it out at your local Walgreens online – pick it up and frame it in a nice frame.

Homemade Granola: One hour

Supplies:

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup fruit jam (strawberry or apricot)
  • 3 cups old-fashioned oatmeal
  • 1 cup mixed nuts
  • 1 cup raisins or other dried fruit
  • 1 cup mixed seeds
  • 1 cup coconut flakes

Cook butter, sugar and jam together in a small pan until smooth. Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl. Pour sauce over dried ingredients. Toss well. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes at 325 degrees, stirring every 10 minutes. Spread mixture on paper towels to cool. Add cacao nibs if you want it sweeter and present in either a tin or a sachet to keep it fresh.

Scrapbook: 2-4 hours depending on how much you care

Supplies:

  • Notebook
  • Printed photos
  • Construction paper and markers

This is for more of an in-depth gift to your significant other or parents. It is also for those who aren’t afraid to get a little creative. Print out a ton of photos and make a scrapbook detailing fun trips, events and memories. Throw in funny quotes or comments. This will be one of the best gifts they et this year.
