Charleston Restaurants: Where to Eat and Drink

One of guys that we met during our trip to Charleston told us the following: if there is one thing that the South takes seriously it is leisure, including brunch. As far as I’m concerned, the best way to learn about a new city is to eat the local food and if that includes brunch, you can bet that I’m a happy girl.

Charleston Restaurants: Where to Eat & Drink

I found that Charleston restaurants take four things very seriously: brunch, lunch, oysters, and drinks. Here 9 places I recommend that you try if you’re visiting Charleston.

Southern Brunch

Shrimp and Grits at Poogan’s Porch

Poogan’s Porch

Poogan’s Porch came highly recommended from just about everyone that I talked to. Like most of the establishments in the area, the restaurant is actually a converted house. The name of the restaurant comes from a little dog, Poogan, that roamed the area and even includes a little gravestone for the little pooch.
Not only does this Charleston restaurant have delicious food and mimosas but it is also haunted! Legend has it that one of the former residents of the house haunts one of the ladies’ restroom and that she waves from a window on the second floor. Although I went into the bathroom and stared at the second floor windows from across the street, I saw no ghost. But on the other hand, the shrimp and grits, she crab soup, and pimiento cheese fritter were amazingly delicious so I’ll call it a draw.

Husk

If you’re going to do brunch in Charleston then you need to take a visit to Husk. Located right next door to Poogan’s Porch, Husk is all about creating a menu that honors ingredients. As the restaurant boasts, “if it doesn’t come from the South, it’s not coming through the door.” The menu is created daily depending on what is fresh that day. A word to my vegetarian friends: get ready for very limited choices. In fact there were only 2 vegetarian dishes on the menu and one other that had fish but no other meat. In addition to lovely brunch menu, the hand crafted cocktails menu is incredible. Husk is a must in Charleston!

Oysters

Pearlz Oyster Bar and Amen Street Fish and Raw Bar

Oysters are one of my favorite foods. While we have great seafood in Southern California, we don’t have a great selection of fresh oysters. So since I’m obviously a deprived California, I had to get oysters a few times … yes, three times.

Lunch Break

Five Loaves Cafe and Closed for Business

Both Five Loaves and Closed For Business are two great spots for Lunch. The former reminded me of a fancy, local Panera: a great place to pair a half sandwich with either a salad or soup … or a three soup sampler as seen above. Closed for Business, on the other hand, is perfect for when you want to grab a (veggie) burger and a beer.

Drink

The Gin Joint
This place is amazing! While I cannot vouch for the food, the drinks are fantastic. If you love gin (or whiskey, or brandy, … or rum) then you’ll love this place. Don’t know what kind of drink you want? Just choose two words (like ‘tart’ and ‘floral’) and let the bartender work their magic.
Vendue Rooftop Bar and Restaurant
There are a ton of rooftop bars in Charleston but my favorite was Vendue. While our view was limited since we went up at night, the bar offers views of Fort Sumter, a ton of churches, and the Waterfront Park.

have you visited any of these restaurants or bars while in Charleston? Do you have any other recommendations for where to eat and drink in Charleston?
