The Lacquer Legion: CRISP…Krispy Kreme Nails (work / play / polish)

Hi guys. It’s September’s Lacquer Legion and the prompt is CRISP. I had so many ideas for this challenge. Potato chips. Fried chicken. Bacon. Can you see a trend here? (Apparently I’m hungry.) I ran with the food theme and settled on one of my favorite things: Krispy Kreme donuts! Beloved worldwide, if you haven’t had a hot one, you’re missing out. This nail art was so fun to do!

The first step was creating the donuts. I made a few extras in case I needed some backups. I mixed gold and tan Sculpey polymer clay (I have Sculpey%20III Polymer Clay Color Sampler, Multicolor

this set). Then I rolled the clay into a few tiny balls and poked a hole through the center with the handle end of a nail art brush. I had to mold them just a bit to make them smoother and flatter. At this point I added some sheen using a few eye shadows from the NYX%20Cosmetics Love In Paris Eyeshadow Palette C'est La Vie

NYX Love in Paris C’est La Vie palette. Then I baked them for 15 minutes in a 275F oven. After experimenting with a few different “glazes”, I finally settled on good ole’ Seche Vite. (Can you believe I actually struggled over which “shine” I wanted? LOL.) Below is a pic of the donuts after baking, but before “glazing”. After I finished this step, my daughter said, “Geez, I like totally want Krispy Kreme donuts right now.” I agreed!

I painted four nails white and added green dots to mimic the Krispy Kreme motif. I thought it would be too crowded with the whole logo, so I recreated only the first few letters on my pointer with red acrylic paint (and some white acrylic paint touch-ups). The middle finger is my favorite. I started with a natural base, hand painted the donut and chocolate frosting, and topped all the nails with Essie Matte About You. Then I went back in with Seche Vite only on the chocolate frosting to shine it up. The sprinkles (or “jimmies”, as Beauty Judy calls them…which is ridiculous, by the way!) are painted with acrylic paint so they would pop against the dark base. Last but not least, I attached the donuts to my ring and thumb fingers using wet topcoat. This was surprisingly strong. I showered and made it through a whole party with the donuts intact. If you wanted to sport them longer, you could use a little nail glue.

I’m on a mission to start consistently using a base coat. I’m really liking Holdfast by Cirque Colors right now, so that was my base. The other polishes I used are:
