flocks of fancy

According to several sources that I found in my quick search for does-this-title-make-any-sense, hummingbirds don’t travel in flocks. But Hummingbirds, now that’s a different story. The sewalong for Cake’s Hummingbird pattern starts on Monday! The event will include ten lessons from Cake Patterns — five for the peplum top and five for the straight skirt.

To throw another fun element into the mix, anyone who purchased a pattern during the presale received it in a colored envelope. The color denotes your “house,” and whichever house completes the most items wins a $10 gift code for Cake! If the envelope you received is green, you’re in the Violetear house, which I’m moderating. See here for the details about the house sorting, including the stitching phenoms who are heading up the other houses! (Many thanks to Mikhaela for this graphic!)

I’m planning to make both the dickey top and flounce skirt at some point, but my next Hummingbirds will be the non-challenge versions. I’m planning another orange-view skirt, made from heavyweight natural-colored linen, with piping at the front panels, pockets, and waistband. My green-view peplum top will be made from the rayon knit pictured below, which I chose from my stash because the colors reminded me of the adorable Violetear hummingbird. :)

Source of the hummingbird pic — I took the pic of the fabric. :)

Of course, the sewalong itself is not limited to presalers, so if you’re joining us, post your Hbird pictures to the Flickr group here.

about me and cake

Unless this is your first visit here (hi!), you’ve no doubt noticed that I have rapidly developed an affection for Cake Patterns. I’ve been following Steph’s 3 Hours Past blog for years, admiring her style in so many respects, but we’ve only recently begun conversing. She initially asked me to help her with some pattern testing for proportion, etc., and we struck a great rapport right away. Yesterday, she announced that I’m joining the Cake team; just in case there is anyone reading this who didn’t see that, I wanted to let you know. :) I am beyond thrilled about this, obviously – I get to combine my passion for sewing with a talent for editing that I have always enjoyed. Furthermore, I get to do that for Steph, whose inventive approach to drafting has, I believe, changed the home sewing landscape irrevocably.

Because this is a personal sewing blog, I feel it’s important to disclose that connection, since I cannot be considered objective where Cake is concerned. Having said that, I have never been paid to blog about or post a review of any pattern, neither here nor on PatternReview. I am still sussing out what I will and won’t blog about on moonthirty regarding Cake, but I will do my best to stay transparent. Let me know if you have any questions!
