Fall Fun for Kids: Foam Scarecrow Puppet Craft {Free Printable}

Though I know Christmas is already on many of your minds, the fact is that fall is very much still here! My baby boy is still learning about the fall season and all that is normally associated with it in his preschool class. He comes home talking about the falling tree leaves and other fall happenings, so I thought a fun scarecrow kids craft would be great for him! If you want to have a little fall fun with your kids, try this scarecrow puppet craft with them before you kick off the Christmas season! We even have a free printable scarecrow template for you to use! (By the way, this craft is fairly simple and uses few supplies, all of which can be found at Walmart.)

Foam Scarecrow Puppet {Kids Craft}

Materials Needed:

• Scarecrow template {PDF}
• Foam rectangle sheets, about 4 (aff)
• Construction paper, 1 sheet
• Super glue and Elmer’s glue
• Scissors
• 1 3/16 in wooden dowel, about 12-15 in long (aff)
• X-Acto knife (optional)
• Hand-held hole puncher (optional)
• Sharpie markers (optional)

How to Make a Foam Scarecrow Puppet for Kids

1. Cut out template pieces using dashed lines as the minimum border. (You can cut further out from the dashed lines.)

2. Glue each template piece (except collar) to a foam sheet (your choice of color for each). Tip: Use only a light amount of Elmer’s glue and don’t place any glue on the actual piece, only on the paper around it.

3. Glue collar template to construction paper and cut out.

4. After glue thoroughly dries, cut out each piece from the foam, following the solid lines. Tip: Using an X-Acto knife will give you a crisper cut, but scissors are just fine, that way the kids can be more involved! Remove paper backing from foam piece.

5. Using the same construction paper, cut out small strips to use as “straw” around the hands, pants, and head.

6. Assemble scarecrow puppet (I found super glue works better than paper glue), placing dowel down the middle, and overlapping hands and face with the shirt and hat, respectively. Add your strips of “straw” in between, as well, creating the effect of straw coming of out from under the shirt sleeves, pant bottoms, and hat.

7. At this point, you and the kids can decorate your scarecrow puppet as you wish. Some ideas include: using the hole puncher to create “eyes” from a foam sheet, drawing a face or adding patches to the pants with Sharpie markers, or anything else you like!
