How to Create a Rustic Look in Your Home

One of the current ‘in’ trends when it comes to interior styling is to bring in decor that gives the space rustic (or vintage, as some may say) feel. Whether you are all for antiquing, a garage sale guru looking for the perfect DIY project, or shopping at higher end stores that have vintage looks, a rustic/vintage look can be achieved in a number of ways.

Here are a few ways you can start to style your space to give it a vintage vibe.

Wire utility baskets. The wire utility basket is very trendy now and you can find them pretty much anywhere- garage sale, antique shop, most craft stores, and even some retail stores like Restoration Hardware or Pottery Barn. Use them to store items like pillows and throws, office supplies, children’s toys, pretty much anything!

Hardware. Just by replacing the hardware on your kitchen cabinets or a piece of furniture can go a long way when it comes to creating a rustic feel. My favorite place to purchase hardware is Anthropologie.

Artwork. To create a rustic feel when it comes to artwork, you need to be intentional about what you hang and how you hang it. When hanging artwork, mix and match vintage and modern frames, artwork, and signs. Maybe even try hanging some frames from a thick wire that is exposed. When it comes to an art display, this is your time to make it personal and unique so don’t be afraid to add your own touches!

Accessories. When styling your bookshelf or coffee table, use vintage-looking accessories like mercury glass, vintage vases, tin cans, and old books (just to name a few). Make it personal by adding some childhood favorites of your own!

Kitchen storage. Replace your Tupperware containers and canisters that you store your flour and sugar in with vintage jars. You can find a variety of sizes and colors in craft stores. If you do end up buying true vintage jars, be sure to thoroughly wash them and ensure no dirt or residue is left behind prior to use.
