Felicidades! Dia de Los Muertos or Happy Day of the Dead!

Dia de los muertos is typically a holiday in which many spend celebrating/mouring the loss of loved ones. They create altars in their homes, make their passed on loves favorite foods and traditionally celebrate them by partying at their graves, eating and drinking. There is a lot that goes into it, but that’s the basic gist of it. Today, they more commonly do altars and hold festivals where people go and celebrate.

I have done tons of Dia de Los Muertos sugar skull makeup looks and I think any one of them is fun to try for this special day. In Mexican tradition, marigolds (which are orange) play a big part as these are typically left out on the graves of lost loved ones and used to decorate altars, etc. If you wanted to be very traditional with your colors, you could use purple and orange colors in your sugar skull makeup which I think looks a lot more traditional to this holiday. Often times, marigold flowers are sold and used on this day as they hold a huge symbolism in this holiday. I’ve done 2 other dia de los muertos makeup looks here, and here. If you want more Dia de Los Muertos makeup inspiration as well as inspiration for recipes, decor, etc., check out my Dia de Los Muertos pinterest board.

You may or may not know, but I’m not actually Hispanic in any way; I’m Italian Irish, but I grew up around many Hispanic people and their traditions as both my step dad and step mom are Mexican. Also, I live in southern California which is basically like little Mexico. Which is why we have the best tacos.

Anyhow, I’ve always loved this holiday and I think if you are curious about it and want to learn more, definitely seek out your local area for events. Many cities, especially in the USA, hold events for Dia de Los Muertos where they sell candy sugar skulls, flowers, candles, food, and have traditional dancing. It’s a really cool thing to learn about, I think. Also, if you just want to do some fun celebrating at home and take a day to appreciate those who’ve passed on. check out this post for ideas.

I hope you all have a lovely Dia de Los Muertos!
