Kickin It In Kindergarten

Teaching kindergarten has been really fun so far. The kids are just adorable and it’s amazing how well they can function in English. I’m pretty sure I didn’t function in English at their level when I was in kindergarten myself… I mean, I vaguely understood English but I mainly said yes to everything and sat on the circle rug listening to stories about a hungry caterpillar. And here my kids are… learning about science, doing presentations, using mathematical language, and talking back to me on a daily basis.

I am new to teaching kindergarten.. I still don’t know how to teach them exactly. What kind of language should I be using? How slow should I speak? Should I dumb down my language? If a kid didn’t listen to directions the first few times, do I scold him on a class management-basis or do I suck it up and repeat it again because after all, “he’s just a kid.” I learn something new everyday in regards to working with younger children. I’m also learning how to be more patient… because if I don’t, my whole class would be crying on a daily basis hahaha. I’ve got a lot to work on and I still don’t quite know if I’m doing things right… but that’s okay! I’m surrounded by wonderful co-workers who know a lot more than I do. I’d like to repeat that I work with great people. It’s refreshing to work with people who know more than me

Anyways, as I wrap up another lazy weekend of eating & napping, I am half dreading and half excited to go back to work tomorrow morning. I made some char siu (with my new oven… thanks Asuncion!) so I’ll have a decent lunch tomorrow. I’m also excited to jump back into debate. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, aside from GT1, I only teach debate. I was dreading it at first since I didn’t know what the hell I was doing. Debate at April was basically “thinking outside the box.” It was just already-smart kids logically supporting their opinions. Poly’s debate is real competition style debate. There’s an actual structure and roles are divided among 3 speakers per team. I was so effing confused at first, but after watching a debate or five, I got the hang of it. I’ve already made literature for the class. Doris is back! Haha. Oh wait, they call me Ms. Vu nowadays… Anyways, here are some pictures of my teaching life in Seoul so far:
