Closet Covet: Corey Lynn Calter

Following my beginning of the month routine, I flipped through the latest fashion magazines and was particularly happy with what I saw in the April edition of Lucky. I spotted an super cute blush pink cotton-blend blazer by Corey Lynn Calter- a name in fashion previously unknown to me.

The color and apparent femininity of the blazer caught my attention and encouraged me to investigate Corey’s designs further; I was extremely pleased with what I discovered.

Once again, it appears I’m late to the scene. Corey Lynn Calter launched her clothing label in 2000. Her line is filled with original prints, feminine, flattering cuts, and colorful, whimsical twists on classic silhouettes.

Calter describes her history with fashion saying:

“Fashion was what brought me to the punk scene. The Victorian influence has always appealed to me, too. In vintage stores I discovered granny boots and corsets.”

Corey was spotted by ‘Sex and the City’ stylist, Patricia Field, wearing one of her own designs, and Field extended an invitation for Calter to design for her boutique in the East Village of New York City. Corey designed for Broadway plays like Guys and Dolls and the San Francisco Opera- developing her line of custom corsets and learning to “fit people’s bodies from a big opera diva to a skinny ballet dancer.”

She moved to Los Angeles where she “quickly gained a reputation for beautiful, edgy dresses and separates in colorful prints, stripes and polka dots.” Her clothes can be found in over 200 stores including Barneys New York, Nordstrom, and Anthropologie. Her Spring 2013 Campaign features actress Nora Zehetner of Grey’s Anatomy and Brick.
