M.A.K.E., Santa Monica

Sometimes I forget how lucky I am to live in a city where the dining options are so vast that we have the luxury to choose from establishments that serve raw, vegan, macrobiotic, paleo, gluten free and you catch my drift. There is a special place in my heart for all things healthy, delicious and very California. I am now recollecting my brief dedication to vegetarianism my first year of university, when I was a member of Amnesty International and vice president of the Feminist Majority. At was this time in my life where I discovered a healtier way of eating and for that I am grateful. Besides, vegetables, fruit and nuts keep us living – why not discover creative ways of eating them?

M.A.K.E. was cool from the jump, located on the top floor of The Market at Santa Market Place, it offered a chill setting with lots of natural light and great design – serving an entire menu of remarkable vegan raw dishes, developed by raw food chef and author, Matthew Kenney. The Market Tomato Lasagna is all the rage at M.A.K.E. so that took the number one spot on our list. Prepared with tomatoes, zucchini, macadamia, Santa Barbara Pistacho and basil, this dish looked almost too beautiful to eat. Once I figured out how exactly to cut into this looker, I did not hesitate to take my first bite, which was oh so crisp and — I swear, I could taste the colors. This is one of the most clean and simultaneously flavorful creations I have had on my fork in awhile. Hands down a must eat in L.A.

Smoothie lovers listen up, M.A.K.E. is slaying the game with some crucial options. I started with a Malted Chai, which I discovered is a meal all in itself, so I opted to take it to go. Packed with banana, dates, coconut meat, coconut water and cinnamon, this smoothie almost feels like the world’s healthiest dessert. It’s hearty and would be amazing after a hike near the beach. I followed that up with a Market Starter salad, prepared with white peaches, baby gems, purslane and tarragon-mustard. Ripe summer peaches are undeniable and were the perfect amount of sweet to pair with the bitterness of the radish tossed along side it. The highly recommended Kimchi Dumplings with ginger foam and coriander made it to our table. Not only do these green triangles look like a piece of art, but cut them open and they reveal a delicious surprise. Dishes like that, which are created with the utmost attention are so enjoyable to devour. Wrapping up this lunch was another plate from the Classic Mains which came in the form of Bahn Mi Tacos, hand crafted with maitake, guacamole, chipotle creme, carrot and radish. Realizing now that I did not eat dessert – who would like to go back with me?
