Eating is a Sport

Dave and I regularly go on food adventures and when the inevitable food coma descends upon me…Dave informs me that “Eating is a sport” and piles my plate up once more.

It’s rare to find a local in NYC. The city attracts people from all over the world chasing their dreams. They move in, move up then move on out. These people are referred to as transplants. In a way, it is the transplants that make the city what it is. People from all over the world aggressively working towards some type of ideal of success. I myself am a transplant and although I see NYC as a long term plan – I’m not sure it is forever.

But the transplants often forget that NYC isn’t just Manhattan or Brooklyn. NYC is made up of five boroughs; The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Staten Island and Queens. Most tourists and transplants alike will never venture into these outer Boroughs. I am lucky to have friends who grew up in NYC and encourage me to look beyond the boundaries of my neighbourhood.

The outer boroughs are usually more diverse and with diversity comes great food and culture. If you have been reading my blog for a while – you will know that I would be happy to eat my way around the world. The only person more serious about their food than me – is my friend Dave. It was Dave that termed the phrase ‘Eating is a Sport’. Dave and I regularly go on food adventures and when the inevitable food coma descends upon me…Dave informs me that “Eating is a sport” and piles my plate up once more. I prepare for these food adventures by hitting the gym hard in the days leading up to the event.

A few months ago, Dave took me on a food adventure to one of his favourite Malaysian restaurants in Queens. It was my first visit to Queens and although not far from Manhattan, it felt like a different world. I knew the meal was going to be epic when I walked in, sat down and looked around. I was the only non asian. This is a common occurrence on our food adventures and Dave often cheekily refers to me as his ‘token white friend’. None of this bothers me…I am just grateful for the experience.

I might be a transplant but that shouldn’t stop me from exploring all that NYC has to offer. If you are planning on visiting the city…remember that Manhattan isn’t everything…it’s just another borough. Be brave, look beyond the parade of tourists and discover a more authentic side to the city.
