Sailing Sydney

For a mere few hours, I was far from the confines of a children’s playground. For a moment, I was not mummy; I was Francine – the spirited adventurer. Brave, engaged and happy. Total escapism.”

Sydney has to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Next time you fly into Sydney, take a look out the window and appreciate the view. The flight path takes you right over Bondi Beach then circles in on the city, the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House. What a first impression.

Whilst indulging in my love affair of Sydney on a recent two-week stay, it occurred to me that the best way to appreciate Sydney was from the water. If I had to recommend one activity to take in Sydney in all its finest…sailing would be it.

When you live in a place…you tend to take it for granted. I think it’s important to remember to be a tourist in your own city. My sister has lived in Sydney for years and as the mother of a three year old, her attention is so often focused on others. I wanted to give her an afternoon to remind her of the beauty in her own backyard. An afternoon with Sailing Sydney was the perfect answer.

“I bravely took the helm and felt my spirit soar.”

I wanted to document the experience from her perspective, hear her thoughts, and photograph her joy….

“Even when the boat leaned to its limits, I never once felt afraid, for she assured me with her confident glide and strength.”

We set sail from Darling Harbour at 2:30pm. Let’s be real…sailing Sydney Harbour on a Tuesday afternoon is pretty luxurious. I am sure the schleps in their fancy office buildings over looking the harbor must really enjoy the view. I am also sure that actually being out on the water, the wind in your hair, the sun on your face is a whole lot better than observing it from your high-rise.

One of the crew asked me how it felt. – “Ive only just gotten my drivers license…I can’t believe I’m doing this!”

For me, the afternoon was all about the here and now. Being in the moment, drinking in the view, enjoying the company of my sister. The sun came out as we passed by the Opera House and the harbor literally glittered.

“I’m sure everyone onboard had their own personal experience of the afternoon but mine was a sensation of freedom, release and adventure. For a mere few hours, I was far from the confines of a children’s playground. For a moment, I was not mummy; I was Francine – the spirited adventurer. Brave, engaged and happy. Total escapism.”

We finished the afternoon with champagne at Cargo bar and a toast to Sydney. The afternoon was a chance for me to live out a dream and a reminder for my sister that she lives in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Thank you to Sydney Sailing and the crew for a wonderful afternoon. For bookings and enquiries…check out their website.
