Halloween in NZ

I don't want my kids to celebrate Halloween. It's just not that bigger deal here in NZ. Honestly Halloween in NZ feels like a 'holiday' or event invented by the retail chains to sell more stuff. I think as my kids get older and feel the pressure from their peers we may change our philosophy, but for now it's a non-event in my house.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE dressing up. Our family dress-up box is huge and full of wigs, hats, and all sorts of other wonderful costumes for almost any occasion. And I do have quite a sweet tooth and let the kids have treats on occasion. But a holiday celebrating scary gross stuff.... why?
As you can see below, despite my adversion to Halloween I do have quite a penchant for orange!

And pumpkin soup, and yes people from the UK, that is a delicious and very common (down here) type of soup (although I wouldn't ever try it with the pumpkin you get there - but that ghastly culinary story is for a very different type of blog).

What's your thoughts on the commercialism and spirit of Halloween? Do you embrace Halloween or try to make less commercial celebrations in your house?
