Bright Idea: Tracking Students with Flashcards

I have another Bright Idea to share from my kindergarten classroom! This is a simple trick I use when I review flashcards with my students so I can easily ensure that students are getting practice with the sight words that are most challenging for them. I make all of my classroom flashcards by printing sight words, addition facts, subitizing images and more on shipping labels, then sticking the labels onto index cards. Although this is a good idea, it's not my BRIGHT idea. This is what my students see when we practice flashcards.

This is what I see.

The back of the flashcards displays the names of students who struggle with recognizing word or fact on the front of the card. If I notice a student struggling with a certain word, I use a pencil to write their name on the back. That way, when we do flashcards, I know who to call on to read the front of the card. I ALWAYS use a pencil to write student names on the back, so I can erase a name as soon as that student masters the sight word or skill on the front.
