DIY Coconut Oil Lip Balm

I have never been the super crafty one, or the DIY-er whatsoever. You will never find super fancy and cute crafts that my children did at home, or really creative decorating DIY's either. Ever since Ella has been in pre school, I made sure I was not the classroom Mom because of that reason. Just to give you an idea- I got an email from Ella's school about something they are doing with the Polar Express, and we had to sign up to bring things in. Paper towels. I signed up for paper towels. Ha! That's how not creative I am!

So, when I stumbled on this DIY coconut oil lip gloss how-to, I was surprised at how intrigued I was. To be honest, I don't even know what made me click on it, or even think it was a good idea for me to try. I guess because I thought it looked easy enough, and I knew and could pronounce everything! Plus, I love anything that includes coconut oil. I posted before about all of the awesome benefits and uses of coconut oil- using it on my lips on the regular is great!

These lip balms/glosses are great last minute gifts. Ella enjoyed helping me make them- it was easy enough for her to lend a hand- I am thinking they would make great teacher gifts, along with other small items!

WHAT YOU'LL NEED: Coconut Oil Vaseline Lipstick Vanilla extract Microwavable bowl Plastic spoon Small pots for lip gloss

Obviously, I used Target brand vaseline, because that is what I had. The original directions call for raspberry extract, or whatever flavor you like. I had vanilla so that worked fine for me. Also, as for the pots, check your craft stores. I looked high and low in A.C. Moore for smaller containers and couldn't find any, I looked at Dollar Tree (like the original post suggested) and couldn't find any either! Today though, after I had already done this, I found some great ones at JoAnn Fabric- so check there!
The lipstick can also be the color of your choice. The color lightens up a bit, so don't worry about choosing a color that is too dark or too bright!
Start by melting equal parts vaseline and coconut oil- I started with 2 TBS of each. You can always add more! The directions call for doing it in 30 second intervals, stirring between each. That worked great for me!

At this point, add in your lipstick. I started with a little bit and then added more as I needed/wanted. You will also add in your extract flavor-just use your judgement on this. I had to pop this in the microwave again for about another minute to get the lipstick fully melted!

Next, you'll want to get your lip gloss pots ready to be filled- be careful not to overfill. I left a little room at the top just to be safe. Pop them into the freezer for about 15 minutes and you are good to go!

You can take the extra step like Jessica did and used decorative duct tape for the lids. Yeah- remember at the beginning of this post when I said I am not a huge DIY-er? I think that would be taking it one step too far for me! Haha!
For those of you that are like me in the DIY department, or don't have a lot of time on your hands, this is for you. It took me less than 20 minutes from start to finish, even with Ella helping me and Charlotte tugging at my leg!
You can do it!! Give it a try and let me know how it turned out!
