Outsider: 1st Astrid Drawing

This was my first test run of drawing Astrid. I had a semi-clear image in my head of how she would look, but the drawings, appart from being fun to do, always help to really ‘see’ the character.

For the whole drawing I used my favourite, a mechanical pen (**)

When I was writing Outsider the main thing I was absolutely sure about is how her eyes would look and her lips. Everything else really just developed while I was drawing.

First thing I aways do with any drawing is draw the outline on tracing paper, and when I’m sure I like what I’ve drawn, I transfer it onto paper. I was pretty sure this drawing wouldn’t be the final one since nine times out of ten I hate what I draw, especially for something like this where I really wanted it to be perfect.

In total it took me about 3 hours to draw this

For all the blending I primarily used old makeup brushes (those things are fantastic for blending! The more frayed the better), and my fingers. The only colour ended up being on her green eye which I think was a pro-marker, but since I did this a few months ago now I can’t remember what exactly I used.

As soon as I’d finished it though I decided it didn’t like it. She just looked too much like something out of a magazine, like the scars had just been added on and hadn’t really affected her personally when in the book they had. Especially the scar over her lips.

If you want to see all the artwork I’ve done for Outsider you can see it on my Pinterest board here

Her lips and ears were about the only thing I like liked about her. It took another two drawings for me to get it perfect, but you’ll have to wait till I show you those ;)
