Maleficent Inspired Halloween Look

Halloween is just around the corner and wether you fall into the go-all-out fancy dress category, or you’re more likely to be the one with their lights out all night in the hope trick or treaters don’t bother – there’s no denying the popularity of halloween is growing in the UK. So, in very un-typically organised and very-unlike me style I have a halloween tutorial for you – a get the look inspired by Angeline Jolie in Maleficent. Which if you haven’t seen yet – the DVD/Blu-Ray is out on the 20th October. So ok, granted – I don’t have her bone structure or piercing green eyes. But this was a fun makeup look to do. I mean, I am by no means a make-up artist and there are about a gazzilion bloggers out there with more skills with an eyeshadow brush than me. But I’m pretty darn happy with the finished Maleficent Inspired Halloween look. So let me talk you through the steps.

1. Base - I chose the palest foundation I have and combined with a liquid highlighter as a primer to create a bit of an ‘etherial glow’ (that was the goal at least) to help start to create the dimension as inspired by Maleficent. I held off on under eye concealer until after as I knew the eye look was a heavy one and fall out was likely.

2. Brows - For the first time ever I reached for the darkest shade in my HD brow palette and created a strong, dark, angular brow. This is pretty much the crux of the whole look and just this simple step made the whole thing feel like it was coming together already.

3. Eyes - Going for dark, smokey and then a bit darker and a bit smokier. I used the NARS duo in Dogon, pressing the darkest shade on to the lid to create a really dark colour. Then gradually blending out. I used a wet wipe to create the cat-eye type of flick at the side by just wiping away any softer edges of shadow there. I then added a touch of the (LE) Vainglorious eyeshadow which was from the MAC Venomous Villains Collection and was a perfect shade as it actually features Maleficent (the Disney Classic version) on the lid… it also added a redder tone to the eye which feels appropriate for a villainous look. This was also the shadow I used to create some smoke under the eye. I then added lashings of eyeliner – Benefit Bad Gal on the inner rims, Bobbi Brown Black Coffee Smokey Eye Kajal along lower lash line and Urban Decay Ink for Eyes along the upper lash line. Topped off with mascara.

4. Cheeks - Another key detail to the look is the angular contour look. I’ve always said I’m no whizz with the contour but I used the Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze and Glow sculpt duo. Mainly focussing on using the highlighter to add a slightly un-natural level of glow to the upper cheek area. Taking it much higher than I would normally. I then actually used a touch of the Dark Brown shade from the HD Brows Palette to add a more dramatic, and again – un-natural contour line.

5. Lips - The final finishing touch was the lips. Using MAC Prep and Prime to prepare the lips I added a line of No7 Precision Lip Pencil in ‘Fire’, filling in the whole lip after lining to create a base. I then used a lip brush to apply a classic deep red – using Urban Decay ‘Mrs Mia Wallace’ Lipstick from the Pulp Fiction collection for a precise line.

Then of course I tried to look all evil on camera… to capture the finished look for you all! Let me know what you think of it as this is my first halloween tutorial!
