My First Love

Before all of the design stuff, I lived and breathed traditional arts. I drew nearly every single day and even went to a special art school for my entire highschool career. When digital design came along, I seemed to drop the pencils and kind of move onto other things.

I missed those days where I would get totally lost in finishing a piece. When hours ticked by and I didn't care about anything else but creating something in that moment. This weekend I decided to pick up those pencils again and get lost in a little drawing time... and I realized something: I really want to practice this more. I actually found it difficult to use pencils. They were never really my preferred medium (I favor pen more), but it was honestly a shock to me because I wasn't able to get things looking right. It wasn't until I popped my finished pencil sketch into Photoshop and grabbed my drawing tablet that I was able to feel comfortable and fix it up.

It's funny how we change.... how something that used to be so second nature seems to fade with time unless you make the time to practice. This is my final drawing above. It's of one of my favourite makeup artists, Linda Hallberg. Started in the sketchbook, finished digitally. It may not me absolutely perfect in my eyes, but I know that if I keep up with it I can be back to where I used to be. Still, I'm happy with how it ended up and I hope you like it too!

What is a talent of yours that has faded?
