Curly side braid hairstyle tutorial

Here’s another braid tutorial in curly hair that I love to wear during the week.

It’s perfect for messy curls, or day 2 (or day 3) hair. This simple Dutch side braid reminds me of the Katniss braid from The Hunger Games and it’s one of my easy everyday hairstyles.

A Dutch braid is just like a French braid but in reverse. It’s sometimes called a reverse braid, or inside-out braid.

Instead of crossing the sections OVER, as in a French braid, your cross them UNDER. This leaves the braid shape sitting on top of your hair. It’s also one of my favourite braid styles.

This style can be casual and messy, or you can do a neater and tighter braid for work. By twisting the braid up you can create a gorgeous side bun instead of the side braid too.

Step-by-step

Step 1: Start on the right (or left if you prefer!) – I’ll explain as if you’re on the right, but pick whichever side you part your hair. Take a large section above your right ear and split into three.

Step 2: To make a Dutch braid, cross the right piece under the centre section. Then bring the left piece under the right.

Step 3: Next add more hair to each section as you braid. Try to add in even amounts on both sides so you keep the braid shape equal. I take in large sections when my hair is curly as it’s easier than separating my curls.

Step 4: Keep braiding, bringing the right section under the centre, and the left under the right. When you run out of hair to add in, bring your right hand around to the front and braid to the end of your hair.

Step 5: Secure the braid with a small clear elastic and then stretch out your braid. I also like to hold the end of my braid and loosen the hair above the braid too. This stops my hair looking too flat at the back of my head.

Styling tips

As you can see, I don’t worry too much about frizz when I’m wearing this style for work at home. If frizz bothers you, use a serum or oil through your hair before you begin to braid. You can also use a light wax pomade to smooth and define any loose curls around your face.

Don’t worry about making this style too perfect. Pull out the braid to stretch it and make your hair look thicker. Leave some of your curls out to soften the look.

This style looks great in curly, wavy or straight hair. I’d love to see a photo if you try it in your hair. Tag me #hairromance so I can see your photo on Instagram.
