90s inspired #normcore hair tutorials – half up double ponytails and buns

Stepping back in time to the 90s again!

In the final post of my #normcore series, we’re reminiscing about hairstyles we loved to wear to school in the 90s.

These styles were co-created with my friend Rosalie who is obsessed with normcore fashion.

Personally I think normcore only looks hot when you look like a model but I think Rose can totally rock these styles.

Rose wore some pretty funny hairstyles to school. I think her record was 8 ponytails at once! But for these tutorials we picked some styles we think you could still wear now.

90s normcore hair tutorials – half up double ponytails

This style is super simple and while it was one of my favourite hairstyles as a kid, I think you can still wear it now.

You’ll need:

  • 2 hair elastics
  • Comb

Step-by-step

  1. Make a centre part. No need to be super tidy but you can do if you want.
  2. Create a section from your temple to the crown of your head. Secure this with a small hair elastic at the back of your head.
  3. Repeat on the other side. Create a matching section on the other side of your part from your temple to the crown of your head. Tie with a hair elastic
  4. That’s it!

Styling tips

  • Make sure your sections are symmetrical or else your ponytails will be lopsided.
  • Place your elastics right at the back of your head, unless you want a real 90s look with pigtails at the sides of your head.

90s normcore hair tutorials – half up double buns

One step up from the double ponytails, these buns are very cute. Leave the tails of your hair hanging down for a touch of nonchalance.

You’ll need:

  • 2 hair elastics
  • Bobby pins

  4. Twist the first ponytail around into a bun. Twist down, around and back to the centre and leave the ends of your hair loose. You only need to one loop to form the bun.
  5. Repeat to create a matching bun on the other side. Pin in place with bobby pins.

Styling Tips

  • Although the hanging ends look cool, they also have a function. If you try and put all of your long hair into a bun, the bun will be too big and stick out too far.
  • Twist the ponytails down and around to the outside so that the ends of your hair hang down on the inside, right at the back of your head.

There may be a little bit of a mini Princess Leia with this look, don’t you think?
