How to Seriously Write Attention-Grabbing Blog Posts

You have exactly three seconds to grab my attention. Or however long it takes to read the first line of a post. It’s not just me, but most people who read your blog too. And my blog. And everyone’s blog. So, let’s not take it personally, okay?

I’m not going to tell you that people don’t read long posts. I read long posts all the time. I love a good read! But what I am going to tell you, is that regardless of the length of a post, be it 100 words or 100,000 words, stories with too many unnecessary words in them get boring fast. Just like how we all have gotten addicted to Scandal, we’ve also become addicted to action-packed writing.

How do you do it?

The Inverted Pyramid

Just because blogging is relatively new, we don’t need to reinvent the wheel. News story formats follow what’s called the Inverted Pyramid. They place the most important piece of information right at the beginning. You have three seconds, remember? Placing the most important part of your post in the beginning is a great way to keep the internet skimmers in the loop. Also, it gives your readers a chance to decide if they are interested in your post enough to continue reading.

Edit Out All Unnecessary Words

The fewer words you need to get your point across, the better. Blogging isn’t a homework assignment for a five-paragraph essay. People love it when you cut out all the bullshit and get straight to the point. Be stingy with your words and generous with your meaning.

Inject Your Personality In Your Writing

Strong writers have a strong presence in their stories. So strong, you can almost hear them speaking as you read. Writing is idealized speech. Write your posts as an idealized version of how you speak. Do you have trademark adjectives you use? Any colloquialisms? What kind of phrases do you naturally use in while speaking? Keep your posts well-edited and packed with what makes you, you!
