High Five Friday

Happy August!

Wait, how is it August??

Since returning home from San Francisco earlier this week, life has been moving non-stop. We jumped right back in to camp and work and teaching yoga and work and work.

After a day or two of feeling sore and stiff (I’m sure the cross-country plane ride contributed almost as much as the half marathon!), my legs have been feeling good. I’ve been taking it easy and practicing yoga. However, I wish that I was being more mindful of my rest and recovery week.

Things not to do when recovering from a half marathon:

  • Rely on coffee for hydration instead of water
  • Stay up late
  • Neglect your foam roller and stretch only when you bend down to pick something up
  • Resume wearing flip flops
  • Eat food that’s not entirely good or healthy

Not exactly the best plan…

Five Photos {PS are you following me on Instagram? Please do!}

  1. Yesterday, Under Armour debuted it’s new global woman’s campaign – I Will What I Want. I have to admit, when I first heard this phrase, it confused me. But after hearing more, I love the idea. It’s about athletic women who are confident that they will get what they want. Not only that, but they acknowledge the struggle (and set-backs) it takes to get there. 3 of Under Armour’s Women of Will were present to share their stories – World Champion Skier Lindsay Vonn, Professional Soccer Player Kelley O’Hara, and Ballerina Misty Copeland. Go watch this video of Misty’s story – it’s powerful.
  2. Your weekly yoga photo. This is one of my favorites – Wild Thing.
  3. Water slides are so fun. Can’t you tell by my son’s expression?
  4. Farmers Market flowers. I love the summer market.
  5. Race photo from the SF 1st Half Marathon. I love that the race offers free photos to runners! I was even more excited that I had a picture with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background. But since I’m a dummy and my bib number was covered by my Spibelt, I had to scroll through an awful lot of photos to find mine!

Five Good Reads

  1. Google Translate for Runners:This is hilarious – a guide to the true meaning behind some of the things that runners say.
  2. Embrace The Suck: A few days before the SF 1st Half Marathon, my coach sent me this article to read and it really helped me when things tough during the race. I accepted and embraced the suck.
  3. Hope, Fitness and Redefining What Is Possible: As much as embracing the suck can help you get through a tough race, what we define as possible is directly tied to what we believe we can achieve. If we believe we can fly or do any number of things, we’re more likely to achieve it.
  4. The 1 Thing You Are Not Responsible For: There’s so much that we often take responsibility for, responsibility that we put on ourselves which we don’t necessarily need to do. Caren’s post reminds me (again) that there’s one thing that I’m definitely not responsible for. And in not being responsible for that one thing, it lightens my load tremendously.
  5. Can Full-Time Bloggers Live Off Of Rainbows Hugs?: It’s funny. Many of us start blogging because we want to write and share our experiences. Along the way, we start to think about making a little bit of money to help support the costs of running the blog (yes, there are costs associated with maintaining a blog as well as creating quality content). However, when bloggers start to think about their blog as a business, they are often criticized. This is one of the best responses that I’ve read on this topic.

What your goal / intention / wish for August?
How do you recover from a race?
