Slow the Rhythm of Rush

Lately, most of the conversations that I have always come back to the same topic, in one form or another.

How to slow down and stop the hustle of life.

We’re constantly playing this game of catch-up – with work, our families, our friends. As soon as you check one thing off your to-do list, another 10 items emerge. Crazy how that happens, right?

If I’m being honest, I will admit that I often put myself into this predicament. I try to keep up with others around me – their accomplishments and achievements, their full lives, their awesomeness. I try to do too much and end up spreading myself too thin.

Or, I chase the elusive “work-life balance.” And we all know that work-life balance is a myth.

Very quickly, I find myself caught up in a warp-speed tunnel of comparison and high expectations with no exit. Probably because I didn’t create an exit route for myself.

And then last week happens. I was sick in bed for four days, and there was no keeping up with any Joneses. I managed to do the bare minimum to get by, which mostly involved a lot of sleeping.

Over the weekend, I found myself amidst a sea of people at Austin City Limits. OK, it wasn’t like I miraculously appeared in Texas. I had planned a long weekend to visit my dear friend who had recently moved to Austin. Luckily, I was feeling well enough to travel.

We listened to good music, ate good food, and had good conversations.

You know what the best part of the past week was? Stepping away from my computer and unplugging more than normal and spending time face-to-face with real people (like this lady).

Being sick for a week really forced me to slow down. And slowing down and unplugging gave me that exit route from the crazy warp-speed tunnel. It made the music, food, drink, BBQ and company that we shared that much more vibrant and the experiences that much richer.

When we stop the rush, we can appreciate the moment because we can actually take note of the moment as it is occurring. It doesn’t just pass us by.

When we appreciate the moment, we can express our gratitude, and maybe we can reset our happiness set-point a little bit higher. And we all want to be happier, right?

When we stop the rush, we can allow the best of ourselves to emerge because we aren’t constantly reacting in a fight-or-flight way.

I have the choice to do less, say no, and be okay with it. I have a choice to set boundaries and to unplug in order to recharge. I have a choice to change the pace. Who says that we constantly need to travel at warp speed?

I don’t always make those choices, but I know that I need to try harder.
