High Five Friday – Fall Edition

Happy Friday!

Phew. It’s been a whirlwind week. I returned home from Austin late on Tuesday night and spent all day Wednesday readjusting to being at home and catch up on all.the.things. Thankfully, I’m starting to feel better.

On Thursday, I was invited to attend Fitness Magazine’s Meet & Tweet event at the Mercedes Club in Manhattan. This is one of favorite events, largely because I get to hang out with so many of my favorite people in person. I’ll have a recap next week but in the meantime, you can read about the first Meet & Tweet event in 2012 and last year’s event.

And now it’s Friday and I’m looking forward to the weekend! Here are some highlights from the week.

Favorite Photos {PS I share more photos on Instagram. Are you following me? Please do!}

  • Hanging out with some of my favorite people at Fitness Magazine’s Meet & Tweet event aka #FitBlogNYC! From left to right: Ashley, Gabrielle, Amanda, me and Laura.
  • Warrior 3 pose. Oh we have a complicated relationship. This is a simple looking pose but it’s super challenging. It’s a great pose that builds strength and balance – and also a really great yoga pose for you runners!
  • Beautiful fall colors in Brooklyn. My favorite time of year.
  • My first run after being sick for a week. I ran 4.5 miles while in Austin and while it felt great to move, boy, that first run back after a layoff is super humbling.
  • New self-myofascial release tools to play with! The kind folks at addaday sent me this fun gear to test out. I was first introduced to this company during Reach the Beach Relay. Each of our vans had some of these goodies waiting for us and they really helped to keep the soreness at bay.

Favorite Reads Lately

  • Beyond the Filters. If you click and read one post from this list, read this one from Heidi. She nails it and captures the tenuous relationship between our online and off-line lives.
  • One More Day I Get To Run. Since I’m still very much in a “I love running” phase of my life, I love this post from Ali on the day before she ran her fourth marathon. I love her appreciation and gratitude for her ability to run, something that I think that many of us don’t appreciate enough.
  • A Shot In the Arm. This post from Kristin Armstrong sounds somewhat reminiscent of my week, and not just because I was in Austin. She got a flu shot and ended up feeling sick and fatigued for longer than expected. But it led her to a interesting realization – how sometimes it takes a little bit of pain and hurt and getting sick to make us strong, to offer us protection.
  • It’s OK to Wish Mamahood Away. So on the day that I wrote about the need to slow the rhythm of rush in our lives, Carla wrote about her desire to wish away an afternoon she spent with her daughter at the American Girl store. It’s kind of ironic since Carla is usually the one who reminds me to be live mindfully, yet our roles were reverse on this day. Maybe a sign that it’s OK if we both live mindfully AND wish away some moments in our lives?
  • Quick Check-In from Haiti and Home From Haiti. I can’t even tell you how much I admire my friend Tracy. She’s an incredible mother and writer and woman and runner (who just BQ’ed at The Twin Cities Marathon!) and giver. She recently returned from a trip to Haiti to serve a mission. She reminds me that if we want to do more or feel called to do more, we should – we should volunteer or find a way to serve.

And, National Stroller Running Day is coming on November 4th! Katie from Moms Little Running Buddy has teamed up with some great companies to all of your runners out there who go the extra mile to live a health lifestyle and stay healthy for your families. Head over the Katie’s blog for all the details on events across the country and a great giveaway.

How has your week been?
