The Thing About Hanging Curtains...

The thing about hanging curtains is you have to hang them high and wide. That's it! So easy, so simple ----right?!

If you aren't convinced yet, let me show you. Curtains or drapes are the BEST way to make a window look larger. They add texture to a room. And are the perfect way to bring in some contrast. Drapes give your room a finished look.

But if you hang them tightly around the window, you are shrinking one of your room's best assets. (the window!) Take a look at the drapes in my house. When I first moved in, I wasn't sure what to do with them. The previous owner had them hung the 'wrong' way-- just right above the window. But then I saw this graphic on Pinterest (here) and I had a light bulb moment.

In my dining room, we hoisted that curtain rod up! Don't worry about making a new set of holes in your wall. Just patch, paint and move on. Hanging the curtains HIGH and WIDE will make your room feel taller and more dramatic. Yes you may need to order new curtains. Once you move those drapes up high, you will need reevaluate length. But trust me, it is so worth it!

In my family, the printed curtain panels from West Elm (they are no longer available, but these are similar here) really define the room. It is a bold print and yet a neutral at the same time. This wall is actually 4 separate windows and with 4 smaller windows on top. But by hanging the panels in between the windows, it creates the illusion of one large window. Which makes the room feel bigger.

Finally in my breakfast nook, I have this bay window. At first I wasn't quite sure what to do with it. It is one large window in the middle, flanked by two skinny windows on the side. So I ended up ordering a custom rod that would fit the wall perfectly. (Here is a rod similar to the one I bought.) Getting the right size rod is worth the small investment. Once again, we hung these drapes high and wide.

And these drapes are actually burlap panels that I made myself. The burlap is from JoAnns. The fabric comes finished on the sides. So all you have to do is sew one straight line to hem the bottom and one straight line to create a rod pocket at the top. Sewing burlap is messy, but I love the 'linen' feel of these homemade panels. And the price was even nicer! I placed these panels between the windows and off the the sides to create that illusion of one large window.
