Bridal beauty tips: What is Airbrush Make-up?

Today we’re back with Barcelona-based make-up artist Meritxell Seva! Last time Meritxell shared her pre-wedding skin care tips, and for today I picked her brain a little about a new trend in bridal make-up: the airbrush technique.

Meritxell, to me the word airbrush sounds like something industrial or related to cars… what is it exactly?

An airbrush is a small tool that, using compressed air, sprays a fine coat of ink, paint and also specific types of make-up. The big difference with traditional make-up techniques is that the product (foundation, blush, etc) is sprayed onto the skin instead of being applied with sponges, brushes, fingers, or other methods.

They say it was first used in for make-up purposes in1959, on actors in the film Ben Hur. From that moment on, its use in the entertainment business has grown.

If it’s been around for that long, what has contributed to its recent popularity?

Airbrush make-up has become more popular with the advent of high-definition video and television (HD). As the make-up is sprayed on, it allows for an even, sheer and natural appearance of the skin. If applied properly in a fine mist, it can create a flawless finish, covering skin imperfections while appearing less heavy than traditional makeup. It also lasts longer than traditional powder or liquid foundation, able to stay put up to 12–24 hours.

Its natural appearance, long duration and special suitablity for HD video and digital photography makes the airbrush technique perfect for brides. Even if it may cost slightly more conventional make-up, I think it’s absolutely worth it!

Which professional can do the airbrush make-up?

Any make-up artist specialized in using the airbrush tool (preferably with experience in photos and filming), will be able to orientate you and to clear all doubts you may have with regard to this advanced technique.

The airbrush is more sanitary than traditional make-up (no sponge or similar touching the skin) and it’s also faster, if applied by a trained artist. It assures the quality and permanence of your make-up for the photos and video the day of your wedding. In my opinion, it will guarantee you a better experience and allow for a high-quality bridal look like no other type of make-up.

Thank you Meritxell!
