MADRID BITES: Churros con Chocolate

The two must-try places to enjoy this Spanish treat is San Gines and Valor. San Gines is known for their churros, the consistency is a bit better, and Valor is known for their amazing 125-year-old-recipe-hot chocolate. So it’s all about preference really. I soak the churros in as much chocolate as I can so my pick is Valor. The funniest thing is I can’t usually drink a whole cup of hot chocolate because it gets sweetyly-sickening after a while, but in Madrid I would finish my cup way before TD haha! Spanish hot chocolate is not too sweet and good to every last drop.

Chocolaterías Valor

A chocoholic’s dream with desserts, bonbons and specialty chocolate drinks made with beans from all over the world. The star is their own hot chocolate recipe of course.

They have excellent, fast service and have lovely Filipinos wait staff that are the nicest. I love the location and view, which is perfect for watching the world go by al fresco, but please take note of the extra 15% charge when sitting outside. Their churros don’t have the typical ridged surface, but it’s still pretty yummy.

They also have porras, a thicker version of churros, but I didn’t try it because their porras supposedly isn’t as good as their churros.

Chocolatería San Ginés

San Gines has this old school charm tucked in a little alley behind a theater. Unlike you Valor, you line up and order your Churros at the counter and that’s pretty much all they serve. If you want some tap water (safe to drink) grab one at the bar yourself because the waiters here are so busy that they won’t have time to do it for you.

If you want to take a break from thick Spanish hot chocolate, then you can also opt to dip churros into cafe con leche (coffee with a lot of milk).

I don’t recommend the porras, which was served to us cold and too oily. The churros consistency is slightly better than the one in Valor.

San Gines can be hard to find so having a map/google maps prevented us from getting lost.
