BERLIN FINDS: Free Alternative Berlin Tour

There are many walking tours of Berlin, from your usual tours to pub crawls and the underground clubbing scene. One tour that I can recommend for people who are interested in street art and alternative lifestyle is the Alternative Berlin Tour. You will learn to decode the graffiti you see all over the place (I gained a new appreciation for their artistry and the story that the graffiti artists tell in their own unique styles), learn about people who choose to live in squat houses and if you are lucky see an alternative gallery.

This is a free tour, meaning you tip whatever you like to the guide after the tour based on how much you enjoyed their tour. Personally I think 5 to 10 Euros per participant is a good range, considering the size of the tour. If the group is small then I would give more.

Below is a selection of the hundreds of photos I took during our tour. I hope you enjoy the photo blog!

Little Lucy and all the ways she offs her cat.

Street art using metal that are secured onto walls or sidewalks.

A section of the restored Berlin Wall.

Street art covering whole sides of building that boggle the mind – how on earth did they get it up there?

Victor Ash’s Astronaut / Cosmonaut which is quite famous.

I particularly loved this style of painting a wall white, then carving out the design. Isn’t it so cool?

As we continues our walk in around the city I got to know more about my current city, Berlin. I didn’t realise that people went fishing in the Spree.

Caught someone in the act of painting his own street art.

We learned a little bit about the Berlin wall. Though it has come down, they still have markers on them.

We even went inside this former church, which is now occupied by a restaurant, classrooms and even an exhibit space. We were able to check out the cool exhibit going on.

I love the colourful, bizaare but beautiful street art, that in other places would look out of place, but in edgy, cool, gritty, old and new Berlin seems to fit just right.

When joining this tour, make sure you have a day pass because to get from one area to the next the walking group takes the train to cover more areas. Thanks to our friends for inviting us to go with them while they were visiting Berlin! We had so much fun!

I would love to try the other tours like the Green Tour or the Taste Berlin. I am also interested in the Twilight Tour, but I am not sure I am brave enough haha!
