Are you a Pum Pum Gyal?

>> Whilst I was rummaging around in recycling bins, all the way out west in the Rum Kitchen, some Pum Pum fun was going down. Stylist Savannah Baker and business brains Gemma Shane have come together to launch Pum Pum Socks, gestated back in 2009 when Savannah began to hand make her own socks for styling purposes. The idea is simple enough – five styles of socks with plenty of frills attached. But it’s the world attached to Pum Pum Socks that makes this something to watch out for as the next best mono-thing idea to emerge alongside the likes of Shrimps and Le Kilt.

Um Pum Socks is where Jamaica meets Japan as Savannah fuses Harajuku kawaii vibes with her own love of ragga dancehall style. They purposely re-package the derogatory meaning of the phrase Pum Pum (meaning term… vagina in Jamaican patois) under their cutie socks and then pair them up with “gyals” – aka dancehall queens, female artists and creatives. It’s an empowering combination that makes Pum Pum something more than just a few frilly socks. Plus it only adds fuel to my whole Hyper Kei theory linking in with a raft of British female designers, who are really going for it and generally doing it well.

If current Pum Pum fans including the likes of Lana Del Rey, Rita Ora and Azelia Banks are anything to go by, then this is just the very beginning for everyone (a men’s range is in the pipeline) to get some rhythm on their feet.

Pum Pum Socks are available online as well as at Brown’s, Opening Ceremony and VFiles later on in the year.
