Allotment Tour

I’ve not been out running this week. Since I smashed my record time at the Park Run last weekend, my left knee hasn’t been right so I have had to rest it. I figured for the vlog this week instead I’d give you a bit of a tour of the allotment. I’ve trimmed the video a bit because I didn’t realise how windy it was on Sunday morning! Also the 6-year-old displayed some pretty spectacular comic timing with the water hose about halfway through. Messer!

Some background information for you:

We rent an allotment on a community allotment scheme run by our Local Authority, which is Fingal County Council. Our allotment is 10 x 20 metres in size and more than enough to eat extremely well from. At the moment it’s quite empty as we’ve cleared it for the winter. We intend to pop a lovely blanket of manure on the raised beds over the next fortnight or so which will mulch down over the winter.

We’re growing some winter vegetables and salad in the polytunnel that are just beginning to sprout up after we cleaned the plastic and cleared the ground a few weeks ago. These include lettuce, broccoli, peas, carrots, chard and cauliflower.

In case you can’t hear the details on the video; at the bottom of the allotment we have a tool shed (brown) and a “Summer House”. Both of which we received when neighbours were doing work in their gardens and didn’t need them anymore. The raised beds are made from recycled scaffolding planks.

The reason why himself can’t be seen on the video is because he’s off up tending to the herd of free range pigs that we keep as part of a syndicate.
