Five Ways To Stop Sweating The Small Stuff

There are two types of people in this world – those who who let drama wash over them without flinching and those who tend to overthink things and let stress get the better of them. Sweating the small stuff makes life a lot harder than it needs to be and can even make us sick. Stress hormones raise our cortisol levels and a chronically stressed state increases our risk of heart disease and weakens our immune system.

So let’s kick stress into touch and stop sweating the small stuff now.

Here’s how:

1. What you think you become: If you’re forever saying how stressed and busy you are then guess what? You’ll be forever stressed and busy. Your thoughts and words become your actions. So it’s really important to stop filling your mind with negative thoughts and dwelling on the areas of your life that are causing you stress. Don’t let your negative thoughts overshadow your positive ones. There is always a silver lining – sometimes you just have to dig a little deeper to find it.

“Stress is nothing more than a socially acceptable form of mental illness.”
― Richard Carlson

2. Stop judging: How often have you jumped to a quick conclusion about something, got yourself all hot under the collar, and then realised you’d got the wrong end of the stick? We all fall into the trap of making snap assumptions about people and situations and this takes up unnecessary time and energy. Try and think the best of every situation and you may be surprised that some of the tricky times in life may not be so tricky after all.

“We need to break the habit of overreacting because of our speedy assumption and judgments”
― Richard Carlson

3. Make time: We all need to stop and smell the roses from time to time. This may be easier said than done when you’re staring down the barrel of a tight deadline or if you’ve overcommitted some aspect of your life. But we need to learn to say no sometimes. Often we measure our success by how much we earn and how busy we are so it’s important to step back sometimes and look at the big picture. Consider re-programming how you measure success. A great measure of success is allowing yourself some occasional me time. It’s during this time our bodies and minds get time to recharge – when we are reenergised we’re more effective in every aspect of our lives so remember to take some time out.

“If we would just slow down, happiness would catch up to us.”
― Richard Carlson

4. Get it in perspective: It’s easy to overreact to situations when the going gets tough but it’s important keep things in perspective. If you’re facing a particularly stressful situation ask yourself how much it will actually matter in a week, a month or a year’s time? Usually in the heat of the moment problems are magnified and projecting out gives your stressful situation a little much needed perspective.

“Don’t sweat the small stuff . . . and it’s all small stuff.”
― Richard Carlson

5. Break the habit: We often pride ourselves on our busy lives. After all it feels pretty cool being overbooked right? That is until shit hits the fan and you hit the wall. You’re tired, grumpy, skipping workouts and getting sick. Identify time wasters in your life and eliminate them. It may be as simple as turning off your email notifications so you’re not constantly interrupted every time an email lands in your inbox. Even small changes will make big differences.

“As you begin to eliminate your need for perfection in all areas of your life, you’ll begin to discover the perfection in life itself”
― Richard Carlson
