Are there any Seinfeld fans out there?

I’ll admit…I could watch reruns of Seinfeld for days.

You know how they have “the close talker” and “the re-gifter” and even “the bad breaker-upper”…? Well I’ve decided that I’m “the slow goer.” Case in point…my master bedroom makeover…

Back in the earliest days of spring, I began working on my bedroom.

Here’s where it started.

I began my transformation with a fresh coat of paint.

Knowing that I intended to keep the curtains (mainly because I have too much invested in them) I needed to pick colors that would work well with them. Wanting a good neutral, I chose Olympic Classic Khaki for the walls and Navajo White for the ceiling.

Next came some furniture rearranging, which lead to shopping the house and moving furniture in and out. I replaced a small sofa with my two favorite black chairs. (Just ask my son how I made him help me carry them…through the snow laden yard.)

They had been in the basement, where I never spent any time. How can you enjoy something when you never get to use it? Now, I can look at the beauties every day.

Once I had my furniture arranged and realized that I actually liked it, I decided to create a feature wall. Literally, I was sitting in bed and thought, “I think I’ll put stripes on that wall!”

So I did…creating the stripes using the Navajo White that I had used on the ceiling.

You can find my tutorial for Perfect Painted Stripes here.

Ok…at that point, the paint was good to go and the furniture was placed. That included this adorable desk with mail sorter that once belonged to my husband’s grandmother.

Then the wall decor…

Above the desk, I hung my DIY Branch Mirror and above the nightstands I added some vintage glass doors from an old armoire and layered them with oval antique frames. You can find the tutorial for that project here.

Now during all this time, I had searched for bedding. I bought and returned and then bought and returned some more…until finally I fell in love with a duvet cover from Pottery Barn. It’s the Kendra Trellis Duvet Cover in Sandstone. I layered it on top of a simple off-white quilt that I found at HomeGoods, along with three off-white pillows.

Because I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted in throw pillows, I just made my own. I created the two geometric orange and white pillows from a single curtain panel that I purchased at Target. The fur pillow is another HomeGoods find that I had used in my living room…I love shopping the house.

Finally, I moved on to the gallery wall, which developed over several weeks.

It started out being two rows high, with the arrows being the highest point. Then it grew…

and grew…with a mixture of objects…and prints…and photos…and I LOVE IT!

Last week, I painted this “armoire turned tv stand”. I removed the doors and gave it a good coat of Chalk Paint® decorative paint by Annie Sloan in French Linen.

This last piece of furniture was the final makeover that I wanted to do…for now. (There’s usually always something I want to do later.)

Once it was finished, I finalized that side of the room with a mirror. This mirror hung on the wall originally, but it has leaned against the wall since I painted, which if you remember was early spring!

Yes…it’s been there awhile…but I like it. So I’ve decided to leave it leaning against the wall instead of hanging it.

Since this mirror is not as tall as a typical leaning mirror, I added some vintage baskets above it, to fill the space and add some texture to the wall. I wanted to use mostly round baskets to contrast the rectangle mirror. I don’t like to have too many identical shapes in one spot.

Last, but not least…the decorative accessories…

little touches here and there…

a garden seat instead of a chair…

a tray to corral everything on the nightstand…

books, baskets and a woven sphere…

a pillow on the chair…

and a horse on top.

I told you I was a “slow goer.” I took my time on this master bedroom makeover. But when it’s the place you call “mine,” you want it to be a place you love. You want to walk in and smile. You need it to be a space that makes you happy. It needs to greet you!
