Some of my favorite Christmas ornaments are the ones that are handmade. Hallmark ornaments are gorgeous and the personalized ones from the mall are so cute, but nothing beats the paper tree or the pine cone reindeer that my littles ones made. I hang them lovingly on the tree each year, because they are more precious to me than any others we have. They were made with love and little hands.

Now, my little ones aren’t little. They are grown and well past the days of fruit loop garland and felt stockings. We all grow past those days. Our DIY abilities increase and we begin creating ornaments like these Tassel Christmas Ornaments.

The inspiration came from my latest HGTV magazine. They showed some adorable tassels in their Christmas issue and they’re so easy to make. You can easily make several in less than an hour.

Since I’m using black, white and burlap for my Christmas decor this year, I chose to use this black and white string that I found at my local craft store. I’ll be honest…I don’t really know what it’s meant to be used for. I think it’s meant for sewing clothes, but I’m not sure. I just realized that the mix of black and white would work perfectly for this project.

To begin making the tassels, wrap the yarn or string around a piece of cardboard or as I did…a small notebook. Whatever you use, it should be about 6″ wide. For my tassels, I wrapped the yarn around the notebook 15 times.

Once my yarn was wrapped, I used twine to create the hanger for the ornament. I pulled it tight and created a knot. Then I tied it again at the end of the twine, to allow the ornament to be hung. I chose the twine to coordinate with the touches of burlap that I have on the tree.

Next, I slid the yarn off the notebook and using a piece of the yarn, I tied a knot toward the top of the tassel.

Then, I cut the yarn at the bottom. This creates the tassel.

The tassel ornaments are so cute and extremely quick and easy to DIY.

While the days of making paper snowflakes may be gone, there’s no reason at all to stop creating handmade ornaments. They are a great way to create a beautiful look for your tree, they’re cost efficient and they also make fabulous gifts. The tassel ornaments can be made with any color or type of yarn that you’d like. They would also look beautiful on a wreath, garland or even your drawer pulls.

Have fun getting creative and getting in the Christmas spirit with this easy DIY.
