To The Extreme
If I had to sum myself up in one word, it would be contradictory. My life is a practice in opposites usually moving from one extreme to the other – there’s not much middle ground for me. I’m a fashion enthusiast but also a food lovin’ homebody. I’m as happy running around to fashion events as I am spending a Saturday night at home baking and rearranging the decorative accessories on my bookshelves. And even though I believe myself to be a low-key hippie at heart, I spent my first years in New York on the wild and slightly rebellious side, working at infamous clubs like The Tunnel and Palladium (with a shaved head and septum ring!), which is where I first met my tech-house DJ of a husband.
This year, as New Years approaches, true to form, I am walking a tightrope of extremes, New Year’s Eve is usually the one night of the year that I still dip my toes into that old life of mine, as I intend to go support my guy and spend the night dancing to Victor’s music. That said, I also need to honor the more current me as I ring in the New Year, so an elegant and sophisticated dinner party at home with friends will be the precursor to my after hours adventures. To further my juxtaposed lifestyle, the very next day I’ll be leaving for the polar extreme, whisking the family away to Tulum, Mexico so we can engage in some much needed R&R on the beach. I can’t wait to bask in the sun under a straw hat, go bodysurfing with Jivan in the shorebreak, and get lost on a long beach run at sunset.
My makeup habits and rituals fall right in line and continue to be a study in opposites. When I go for my signature bright red lip, it means no eyeliner or shadow, perhaps a touch of extreme volume mascara, and a simple bare cheek….It’s a dramatic look that I love. And when I chose to focus on my eyes – whether with a mod liquid liner or smoky kohl shadow – I stay away from lip color altogether. And for my two tales of NYE I plan to follow both of these extreme set of rules. A bold red lip in the perfect Clinique Long Last hue of Red Red Red earlier in the night, and later I’ll go sexy and sixties using Clinique Eye Defining liquid liner to create an alluring cat eye! Regardless I intend to have a swoon-worthy meal to ring in 2014 and then lose myself in the movement of my hubbies music before jetting off for my Mexican retreat!
