Twirly Girly

I won’t say too much here, as I think these images speak for themselves. What they do for me, and what I hope they will do for you, is evoke femininity, freedom, and playful celebration.

This past fall, just after Mara Hoffman showed her swooned-after spring collection, I planned a girls’ weekend in Amagansett with my photographer friend Abbey Drucker. No husband, no child, just two ladies with no agenda but to relax, cook, and perhaps capture some beauty through Abbey’s lens. At the very last minute, Abbey asked if I had any designer friends, and could we borrow some clothes to shoot in. Upon leaving the city, I swung by Mara’s showroom and picked up a garment bag; the contents were unknown to me.

The next morning I awoke bared-faced with braids still in my hair from a wedding the night before. Oatmeal in one hand and coffee in the other, I unzipped that bag and discovered a little magic. In five minutes I was engulfed in a sea of dreamy pattern and color, twirling around on my lawn. This was how the day began—and continued.

It was beautiful, fluid, girly. Each moment eased into the next. Nothing was planned, and yet somehow, a celebration of the spirit of womanhood and being free in your own skin emerged. It was playful, fun, glamorous even, but in a very natural, unstudied way. I felt like a modern-day princess spinning around on my lawn and strolling the beach. It reminded me of playing princesses as a little girl with my cousins, and hours spent with my best childhood girlfriend trying on outfit after outfit from our closets. I realized this scenario never would have been possible had my husband and son been with us—and that sometimes, girls just need girl time.
