What’s The Fuss About Boar Bristle Brushes?

After hearing so much about the benefits of natural boar bristle brushes, I thought I would finally try them out. I’ve always used nylon brushes in the past, but according to all the magazines and beauty gurus, they don’t offer the sane benefits to hair as natural boar bristles.

Boar Bristle Brush Benefits:

Here’s the thing about natural boar bristle brushes, they have the same structure as our own hair. They are able to hold moisture and so can lift away dirt and distribute the oils from your scalp to the ends of your hair. The bristles also gently massage your scalp, increasing blood flow to your hair follicles. Because of their flexible nature, boar bristles are also more gentle on hair than plastic brushes. They have the unique property to redistribute oils throughout hair, boosting shine and reducing oily roots. Boar bristle brushes have the ability polish hair, and smooth the cuticle for glossy shine.

My experience:

After a month of using boar bristle brushes, I can honestly say they have made a big difference to my hair. My hair look shinier, feels smoother, and overall generally healthier. When I’m brushing, I feel like there is less breakage especially when it comes to brushing out knots. And my greasy roots and dry ends problem? Solved! Bonus, sometimes I even give myself a little massage scalp massage with my brush and it’s oh-so-nice! The only thing I did have against my boar bristle brush was a little static when my hair was freshly washed. But overall it didn’t bother me as much as I loved it.

Since I was in the market for both a round brush and regular brush, I took a plunge and purchased these three Spornette boar bristle brushes shown above. Spornette Brushes offer good quality natural boar bristle brushes on the less expensive end of the spectrum. They are a great option for trying out boar bristle brushes if you haven’t used them before. The oval pin cushion brush (left) I use for regular daily brushing, the round brush for blow outs, and the little wonder brush for teasing, and getting out tougher tangles. If you’re already a boar bristle brush fan, the Mason Pearson boar bristle brush is the creme dela creme of boar bristle brushes that all the beauty gurus adore. It is definitely a splurge purchase, but after using my boar bristle brushes I can see the value behind it, and I would definitely get it next time around!

It should be noted that boar bristle brushes are probably best for fine to medium hair. If you have normal to thick hair, you may need stronger bristles to brush through your hair.
