Nature Art Inspiration

With the weather warming, you are hopefully finding yourself outdoors a lot more. As we’ve talked about before, just because you’re outdoors doesn’t mean that you have to stop creating. Just as fall and winter lend themselves to cozy crafting, spring and summer lend themselves to a new, beautiful, and spontaneous type of creative making – Nature Art.

Psst – if these photos look familiar, you may have seen them originally printed in Celebrate Summer (limited print copies available).

With the vibrant greens, yellows, blues, and reds of nature, we set out to create each time we are outside. It may be a small cairn built on the way to the park. Or a hanging mobile strung up from the tree by our back window with bits of treasure woven through. We’ve strung dandelions by the hundreds and even built a few fairy houses.

For most of these pieces of nature art, you can just use what you have. Cairns are simple structures (though that doesn’t always mean small!) consisting of stacked stones. Fairy houses can be constructed from a variety of materials such as rocks, sticks, bark, flowers and grasses.

So that you’re always prepared for some impromptu garland and mobile-making, be sure to keep some cotton string and perhaps even a dull needle in your bag. Flower garlands are simple, stringing flowers onto thread through the center of the flower (wildflowers or “weed” flowers work great!) And with a simple lattice made from the string, your little ones can gather all their favorite nature treasures in one special place. Bonus – if you hang it close to home, they can continue adding and removing nature bits throughout the seasons!

So what type of Nature Art will you choose to make? Have another favorite? Let us know in our comments section!
