Revlon Moisture Stain – Day Test/First Impressions

Last week a very exciting new product arrived on my doorstep. Lots of other new things arrived with it but I have eagerly anticipated this UK launch for months so I couldn’t wait a moment longer to review it. I mentioned it briefly last week and said that my first impressions were not entirely positive. When I sat down to apply it for a second time on film I expected a similar experience but it was totally different. The first time I tried it the texture was thick and it looked patchy on the lips, really odd and not at all what I expected as I’ve heard mostly favourable reviews thus far. Once it settled on my lips (and I suspect melted with the heat of my skin) it felt and looked better but the initial application left me perplexed. The second time it was balmy, smooth, TOTALLY different. I can only imagine it was the sitting in my porch in the heat all day that messed with the formula because it’s been fine since but I’d love to know if any of you that have already tried these (they launched in the US a little while ago) have had a similar experience.

So I wore the product for a day with no touch ups – you can see my before and after etc in the video here or below – to test out the wear time. On first application it’s a nice, not entirely opaque colour that feels balmy and comfortable on the lips. It doesn’t really set so it doesn’t dry or create a film, it just feels nice. Because it doesn’t set this finish doesn’t last, after an hour or two (especially if eating/drinking are involved) the top layer wears away and leaves a flush of colour behind. I was drinking from a coffee cup at this stage and can confirm that although there was colour on my lips there was no transfer on the cup so it was a true stain. Unfortunately it didn’t last.. at the end of the day there was little remaining product at all.

It might sound so far like this is a ‘don’t buy this’ warning but far from it, I think you just have to manage your expectations. Unlike the other glossy stain products on the market this is very comfortable to wear and doesn’t leave my lips dry in any way. It does live up to the name ‘moisture stain’ – it is balmy and it leaves a stain.. it doesn’t last ALL day but it lasts a good few hours before you’d feel it NECESSARY to reapply. If you look at this as a long wearing liquid lipstick it’s more impressive than if you compare it to the multitude of other glossy stains out there. It’s a totally different animal and although it’s nothing like I thought it would be I will be buying some other colours when they launch in August so you can expect a follow up then – often different shades behave differently so we shall see!

Once last note – the packaging.. the gold is great and all but I love this, it’s so sleek and I actually prefer it to even the YSL stains.. just me? The shade I have is Cannes Crush and they will retail for £7.99 each.
