DJCAD Degree Show 2014 – My Highlights
Every year, the sun gets it hat on for the DJCAD Degree Show and this year was no different. We rocked up at our old stomping ground at 6pm for the Friday preview night to see what this year’s batch of creatives had up their sleeves!
Katy Howkin’s installation was the first space that grabbed my attention. The centre piece to her show- a stack of gigantic sticky bagels (complete with golden sesame seeds) is surrounded by colour & texture in the form of neon fur, metallics and a wee bit of the obscene!

Artist & Illustrator, Brodie Childs’ show space was filled with intricate monochrome drawings complimented by around 400 hand-poured porcelain mountains. We bought a trio of these from Brodie- which I can’t wait to pick up at the end of the show!

Laura McEwan Marshall’s crisp black and white photography was complimented colourfully with a pair of dried floral benches. These were clearly very fragile- but I WISH that I could have one as my sofa!

Olivia’s beautifully intricate work was a real highlight. We loved the super-fine drawings combined with the symbolic looking geometric frames & their conflicting shaped mounts. We bought the triangular piece above- can’t wait to bring it home!

I really enjoyed Errin’s brightly coloured repeat prints along with her playful photographic cut & paste models.

Alice’s Degree show space can be found in the sculpture sheds which are located in the lane between the Matthew & Crawford buildings. This exhibit is a little off the beaten track and if you’re not familiar with the layout of the show- you can miss it- BUT i’d recommend you seek it out! Look for the dark green door, and you won’t be disappointed. Alice’s show centres around a hanging womb-like sculpture, lined with squishy walls and lighting that you can control to suit your mood. The best thing about this show is that Alice invites you to climb inside the pod and be immersed in its warmth. There’s even the sound of a steady heartbeat- amazing! Her blog is also a brilliant visual diary of her making-process, which is most definitely worth a look.

The DJCAD Degree show runs until the 25th of May and is open Mon – Fri, 10am – 8pm, Sat & Sun, 10am – 4pm. There’s a tonne of creative goodness happening in and around Dundee over the following week including the annual Ignite Festival- which our Spring Pop-Up will be part of (More on that tomorrow!)
