Mistakes to Avoid When Hiring Online Marketing Pros

With the incredible growth of social media and infinite amount of advertising that comes with it, taking advantage of these outlets has become a no-brainer. The difficult part, however, is knowing how to best implement these online standards. From social media management, to blogging, to SEO services, the untrained eye can have a hard time deciphering these Internet-based phrases. Which is exactly why many opt to hire a professional instead. Whether full time or on a freelance basis (ideal for smaller companies), asking a pro can allow you to take advantage of important online tactics without sacrificing on quality. (Or any other work tasks that are being pushed aside in the process.)

But with so many online marketing professionals available, how do you find the right one?

First off, remember that your pro is there to help grow your company, so don’t be afraid to shop around to find the best fit. However, shopping around too much can leave you with unrealistic expectations and a candidate that simply doesn’t exist. If you’re vocal about what it is you need and are willing to communicate, any skilled worker should be able to adapt to specific requests. And, if they aren’t, it’s time to find someone who can.

Starting the Search

Next, look at work background. These workers should have plenty of clips, managed profiles, etc. in order to show what they can do. Look for skills and certifications as well, but take note that the freelancer with too many clients or who “specializes” across the board might be spread too thin to provide the attention your project deserves.

The best indication, however, will be talking to the people themselves. After having an in-person or over-the-phone conversation, you should have a good indication as to what they’re capable of, if they understand your goals, and how they will help get you there.

A good online marketer should be extremely communicative and flexible in order to reach continual growth. Even if it appears in small portions at a time.

What You Shouldn’t Do

  • Be afraid to bargain or customize prices and services. Chances are you won’t be the first to try and talk them down. Why you shouldn’t insult their abilities, they also might not be offering their best deal.
  • Choose the first candidate who comes along. They might be the best, but you’ll never know until you look at others’ resumes as well.
  • Ignore their advice. These pros are in the marketing business for a reason; if they mentioned that something beyond their control should be adjusted or reconsidered, don’t take it too lightly. Failing to do so might affect their work quality as well.
  • Remain uncommunicative. If there is an issue, voice it immediately. Oftentimes marketers experiment to find a solid fit, but unless you let them know something is wrong, or just ill advised, they won’t know to fix it.
  • Have unrealistic expectations. When starting a plan, ask questions about growth rates and stick to those numbers. While unexpected growth can sometimes take place, it’s not the norm. Online marketing is all about consistency and steady growth over a long-term plan.
  • Ask for what you want. Sure they might not be able to pull certain strings, but you’ll never know unless you ask. Besides, they just might know someone who can give you exactly what you’re looking for.

When hiring an online marketing professional, there are plenty of things to keep in mind. Be sure to avoid the above mistakes to get the most out of your hiring – and subsequent marketing – efforts.
