From Microsoft to Apple – How My Allegiance Changed

I’m a Mac. Have been since 2010, when, after purchasing my third computer in five years, I decided to upgrade and save myself the hassle of pouring money into Dell. Also, my computer-nerd brother is a layman Apple spokesperson and had been nagging me about making the switch for a year. So I gave in.

Yes, it was more expensive, but I’ve now had the same MacBook for four years, and the same iPhone for two and a half. (Much to Verizon’s dismay.) Overall, the extra funds were worth paying upfront. Not only have I not had to purchase a new computer, I’ve saved hundreds in anti-virus software and repair bills. And also Tylenol.

Besides, my Mac is fast, compatible, and runs Chrome – and everything else Google –like a champ. Its battery life is even running strong. Can’t say the same for my iPhone, but that’s another blog for another day … probably titled, “My iPhone is Crap, As Told By My Mother.”)

So … when it comes to Macs vs. their PC counterparts I’m hooked on the Apple and I’m never going back.

The “Cons”

Are there cons to using a Mac? Maybe a few. Like how there is not an Apple equivalent of Word – if for nothing else other than level of acceptance among the masses. And how Word regularly crashes on Monday mornings and has to be completely re-installed in order for it to work. (Did I mention the latest Mac-friendly version was released in 2011?) Or, say someone asks me to, “If I haven’t already, open the program in Internet Explorer,” like it is 1998. Except that Explorer doesn’t even exist for Macs anymore on account of it sucking so much. Or when Skype freezes my camera and refuses to let others see my face. But as my brother points out, all of those are Microsoft-based programs and “They really need to get their act together.”*

Also, short keys are different so I have to remember two sets. Control Alt Delete = Command Option Escape, Windows = Command, and so on. And let’s face it, “escape” is infinitely more cool than “delete.”

But really, that’s about it.

For this medium-low techie (with regular access to a far more knowledgeable source), it’s more than enough. So keep all your Windows-based products, Windows, this gal is geared up for some serious Apple using. Except Word, I will totally still use Word, but I’ll take an upgrade whenever you’re ready – which was definitely six months ago.

*His original quote was far nerd-ier and technical. You’re welcome.
