Clueless-Inspired Wildfox SS13 Collection
Okay. So hold up. A Clueless-inspired Wildfox collection? This might be my favorite collaboration since Rachel Bilson did a cameo on Gossip Girl.
Clueless was my absolute favorite movie when I was like, in 4th grade. As a ten-year-old, I idolized the iconic Cher Horowitz and her sassy, fashion-forward ways. I honestly think it molded me into the little brat that I was. I mean, who wouldn't want a rotating closet and the pleasure of driving around (unlicensed) in Beverly Hills in a super cute white Jeep with an equally popular best friend? However, upon watching the movie over and over as I got older, I realized that this movie was so much more than a spoiled, self-centered popular girl trying to go through high school. It was full of inappropriate and drug-related comments that elementary me had no way of understanding, but what makes it hilarious and entertaining now (literally- NOW. I'm currently watching it on Netflix).
Okay- I know that Mean Girls is the ultimate chick flick of our current generation, but thinking about it, that movie was a total knockoff of Clueless. I'm not saying I don't love the total betchy flick starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams (one of my favorites) and Amanda Seyfreid, but it's totally unoriginal. Think about it- Popular girl discovers ginger-haired new girl in high school and makes her over. Before she knows it, ginger-haired new girl turns out to be a babe and surpasses the hot blonde as the new Queen Bee.
Anyway, enough of my Mean Girls and Clueless compare and contrast. Let's focus on the clothes.
When Amy wrote Clueless, the current fashion was grunge. Her vision for the film was to show the rich, upscale high school girls of Beverly Hills. The costumes were to be like characters in the film. Grunge was dark and sad so the color palette was very important to Amy. The clothes needed to be very bright and fun. I wanted the girls to be girls again, with over-the-knee stockings and Mary Jane shoes. We wanted to change the current look that was on the street and show teens how to have fun with clothes. -Interview with costume designer Mona May, by Frankie Mathieson 2010 The Clueless generation consists of girls who want it all- while looking fab getting it. Amy Heckerling, the mastermind of our favorite 90s flick, created a bright and bold wardrobe for Cher, Dionne and later Tai, to contrast against the grunge overtaking the trends of the era. Wildfox's Spring 2013 collection pays tribute to Heckerling, capturing the spirit of "Clueless" and their iconic leading ladies. They're the Kids in America! This collection is for the girly dreamers. For the girls who want to feel great in what they're wearing, for the nights they'll forever remember and the days they wish would never end. Wildfox designer, Kimberly Gordon notes, "I have always wanted to express something creatively that is more than just fashion, it's a feeling, a lifestyle, it's about being a girl. It's capturing a moment. I think I felt it first when I was about 12 around when Clueless came out and I was so in love with the characters, I didn't just love the clothes, I loved the girls who wore the clothes- which made me want to wear them even more."
The Clueless Collection is all about tees that start conversation, sweaters you can wear all day, sleep in and wake up to wear the day after. They're for throwing on so that you can run out the door and feel beautiful anyway. Classic Clueless phrases like, 'As If', 'Totally Bogus' and 'I'd Rather Be Shopping' bring the collection to life in a sassy and playful manner. The line is reminiscent of Clueless and 90s Bel Air babes with bright, girly colors!
As I thought I couldn't love both Wildfox & Clueless more, they've joined forces and created this:
I would just like to say that physical education in this school is a disgrace. I mean, standing in line for forty minutes is hardly aerobically effective. I doubt I've worked off the calories in a stick of Carefree gum.
Sometimes you have to show a little skin. This reminds boys of being naked, and then they think of sex.
Okay, so you're probably going, "Is this like a Noxzema commercial or what?" But seriously, I actually have a way normal life for a teenage girl.
I feel like such a heifer. I had two bowls of Special K, 3 pieces of turkey bacon, a handful of popcorn, 5 peanut butter M&M's and like 3 pieces of licorice.
She's not pretty, she's a full-on Monet... It's like a painting, see? From far away, it's OK, but up close, it's a big old mess.
So okay, I don't want to be a traitor to my generation and all but I don't get how guys dress today. I mean, come on, it looks like they just fell out of bed and put on some baggy pants and take their greasy hair - ew - and cover it up with a backwards cap and like, we're expected to swoon? I don't think so!
I felt impotent and out of control. Which I really, really hate. I had to find sanctuary in a place where I could gather my thoughts and regain my strength... (THE MALL!)
She's my friend because we both know what it's like for people to be jealous of us.
I figured adding my favorite CHER-isms as captions to the pictures from this lookbook would give it an extra something.
Although I did leave out one of my favorite Clueless quotes on Cher's doubts on her current boyfriends' sexual orientation: He does dress better than I do, what would I bring to the relationship? That line alone forever skewed the way I view the opposite sex and their role in dressing inferior to me!
