Interview with Author Angie Schuller Wyatt

H31: Angie, Tell us a little about yourself and your background.

Angie: My grandfather is Robert Schuller of the Crystal Cathedral. He was the world’s most watched televangelist from 1978-2006. My dad and brother are also named Robert Schuller. Because it was a patriarchal system, their spotlight cast a shadow on me. So I moved out of state and found my own path, becoming a pastor and therapist without relying on nepotism. I was the spiritual director at Oral Roberts University and then an Associate Pastor at Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas.

H31: Why did you write your book and why did you title it “God and Boobs?”

Angie: I counseled hundreds of women, and found that they shared similar questions about faith and femininity. The individual stories differed, but nearly all of them wanted to know how faith was relevant to them as modern women. I titled the book God and Boobs to highlight the chasm that exists in church between faith and female sexuality. It seems so wildly inappropriate that it’s funny…but really, everything about our femininity is created by God, and therefore good.

H31: Why is faith so important to the modern woman?

Angie: Modern women are more autonomous than ever before. We aren’t relying on our husbands and fathers to determine our destiny. That means that our relationship with God can be more genuine. We can trust God and rely on God to greater degrees. When we pray “Thy will be done,” we can know that the answer to this question is without limitation.

H31: How is faith different for today’s women than it was for their
mothers?

Angie: For most of us, our mothers and grandmothers married early and raised children. Today’s women are delaying marriage and children, choosing instead to focus on our education, career, dating, travel, and international social justice. Our faith isn’t limited, and neither are the questions that we’re asking God. We are asking God questions that our moms didn’t ask…and so, in many cases, their advice isn’t relevant to our specific life circumstances. We need them for sure! But we also need women who are just a few steps ahead of us in terms of life experience.

H31: What are some tips on how the modern woman can connect with her faith?

Angie: I think the best thing women can do for faith is learning to hear God. I’ve written a series of on my blog about how to hear God. It comes with practice, taking risks, trial and error, and practicing some more…but, as we learn to hear God, we begin to acknowledge that He is with us in every moment of our day.
