When I found out that this month’s Silhouette Challenge theme was fabric, I was thrilled! I’m definitely a LITTLE bit of a fabric lover, and had a project in mind that I had been wanting to try for a while.
Ever since I got my Silhouette I knew it would be a great help in applique. Lately I have been all about working on my sewing space, so it seemed only fitting to make some artwork for my wall. I had some old embroidery hoops laying around and thought a great way to put them to use would be a Sew Cute Applique Wall Hanging.
I love it when I have all the supplies on hand for a project. I simple used a fat quarter, white muslin, Silhouette Sewable Fabric Interfacing, thread and the old embroidery hoops. I started by cutting my muslin into circles slightly larger than my hoop using a dinner plate as a template.
I arranged my letters in the software, and realized I had a lot of empty space that I didn’t want to waste. I decided to fill it with hexagons, and create something with the pieces. Anyone who knows me, knows how much I love any hexagons and 1930′s fabric, so this project is a wonderful collection of all my crafty loves.
One reason I loved using my Silhouette machine was the nice clean cuts that it created. After they were cut, I positioned them on the white muslin fabric.
Second reason I loved using my machine was the interfacing. It was so easy to use and being able to iron my pieces in place before sewing was such a help. It was great to have one product that did it all and not having to add any additional stabilizer or other adhesive.
I will warn you though, when ironing or rather pressing the shapes on to your fabric it might help to using a pressing cloth, so you don’t burn your fabric like I did.
Then, it came time to actually applique my fabric. I was the most nervous about this part because it was my first applique project. I practiced on some of the scraps leftover from cutting my shapes, and when I felt like I had a good grip on how to do it, I got started.
I set my machine to the smallest blanket stitch and went to work. The toughest part was figuring out how to maneuver around corners. I definitely made a few mistakes, but I was totally ecstatic over how cute it turned out. The only problem was my husband was the only one here, and he didn’t understand the excitement over my first applique project.
After I had finished my sewing, I centered my letters and flower in the hoops. Which now that I’m looking at my picture, it looks like it isn’t completely centered. Whoops, I need to go back to that step.
I trimmed the edges of my fabric, and glued them down to secure my new artwork.
Have you ever appliqued before? Have you tried cutting your shapes with a Silhouette or other cutting machine?
