Home is Where the Insurance is

You guise.

I’m an “adult” now.

I put that in quotes because I don’t feel like one. I mean, of course there are days when work feels like work, I want my mother’s cooking, or for us to get our hair done together. Heck, I jut wish she lived here. But technically, I am an adult.

I pay rent on time.

I stopped ordering Seamless every night (though, I still do make a dinner out of passed hor d’oeuvres at events) and instead only treat myself to the website once a week.

I also put together all of the furniture in my apartment. Only one of the pieces is from Ikea. Hung things with a hammer and nails. Fixed the thermometer on my refrigerator so the little food I do buy when I go grocery shopping doesn’t freeze.

I lit my first candles (I’m actually, like, really afraid of fire. I’ve never lit a match or a lighter, until now).

I made the ultimate big girl purchase–deets, soon!

As soon as I tell anyone what I did, it’s followed by it’s time for you to get renter’s insurance.

Here’s the thing. Remember Brooklyn Boy? That was like the only useful thing to ever come out of his mouth (kidding, not really, though). He told me that as I start to settle in here, it would be a good investment considering how much goes into my wardrobe, i.e. blowing money fast at sample sales.

The way he broke it down was that it would protect my clothing/accessories/bags/computer/camera should anything ever happened to my apartment. He said that when I was cramped in a two-bedroom, so I think it’s especially important now that I’m solely responsible for making sure nothing happens to #CITC.

Fast-forward to last week. So, I make this purchase, I show my friend a picture. His reply, “You need renter’s insurance with all of that valuable (mess) you have in (your new, smartly-furnished home), lol.”

He might have put “lol” at the end, but to me, that didn’t make it any less serious. At this point both my mother, boss and now this dude have told me that’s time to get some renter’s insurance.

I found a New York Times article directing me as where I could get a quote from. I shopped around and got quotes from several different companies. I went with the one that covered the highest amount. If that doesn’t sound like a responsible adult, I don’t know what does.

New York, you’re starting to feel like home.

And home, especially now, is where the (renter's) insurance is.

I thought I would share a few pictures of how my big girl apartment is coming along (considering I had to take them anyway for insurance purposes). Stay tuned for the final reveal, I’m still waiting on my settee.

What makes you feel like an adult?

Like a good neighbor State Farm is there.

p.s. Compensation was provided by State Farm via Mode Media. But I did purchase renter’s insurance. I’m acting like an adult!
