Why Don’t You… Wear a Skinny Scarf?

‘Why Don’t You’ is my weekly tribute to legendary editor Diana Vreeland who penned a column of the same name for Harper’s Bazaar for 26 years begging, “Don’t just be your ordinary dull self. Why don’t you be ingenious and make yourself into something else?”

For her fall 2014 collection, Miuccia Prada was reportedly inspired by The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, a 1972 German film revolving around a fashion designer. The film’s influence is evident in the metallics, rich dark tones, and shearling that appeared on Prada’s runway. Basically, the ’70s are back.

Groovy, man.

One item in particular seems to have caught fashion folks’ eye: a skinny scarf.

Perhaps it looks Wilde-ly familiar to you?

Olivia Wilde has one draped around her neck on the September issue of Glamour magazine. And inside the glossy as she breastfeeds her son, Otis, cuddles him for the camera and poses holding a milkshake.

Hehe, see what I did there?

Prada’s delightful little scarf feels a little too American Hustle for me to pull off, though, this trend will look sophisticated when paired with a jumpsuit. Or flared jeans that skim the ground and a loose silk blouse.

If you’re interested, Prada’s super skinny scarf retails for $285. You know, if you’d like to get your Olivia Wilde on. You may buy it in stores (it isn’t available online yet).

Will you incorporate this trend into your fall wardrobe?
