Fall Closet Cleaning Tips

Wait what? Yes, you heard me! Fall cleaning. Just like there is spring cleaning, I think there should be fall cleaning.

A lot of us are familiar with spring cleaning, but this year i am not waiting till spring, I am organizing and cleaning out in the fall.

Have you ever bought large plastic bins to store your clothes in for the winter? I remember when we were looking at buying our house, we visited so many different ones, and in one of the attics, the owner had the whole bin/labelling system that I was fascinated with. But Sam convinced me there was no need for that. And he is right. We have very small closet space and I store my sumer dresses in our upstairs closets in the winter, and winter clothes upstairs in the summer, but before anything is moved up there, I go through it and toss anything that:

• doesn’t fit
• looks too worn out
• hasn’t been worn in over a year
• isn’t “me” anymore – style changes, your tastes change, so your wardrobe should too

If you’ve read my latest post, you know that I have just a slight obsession with coats. But coats, especially if made from natural fibers and vintage, can begin looking worn out too soon. Those are definitely items to let go off.

Accessories are another item that becomes outdated too fast. The slogan – you can never have too many pairs of shoes or too many bags isn’t for me. You might never have enough of those, but you also might run out of space really fast. And fashion, even though is a constant in many of our lives, is also fast.
The fall cleaning doesn’t only include the clothes. Being a beauty blogger, I receive a lot of samples and full size products. So cleaning out my makeup drawer (read: closet) is as important as cleaning out my wardrobe. Carefully examine the expiration date, get rid of the products that have expired, or that you know you are not going to use. This is one of my favorite product shelf life guides:

Make up/Beauty to clean out:

• anything you may be allergic to
• anything that has expired
• anything that has separated or smells funny

Being in love with the idea of DIY I seem to hoard craft supplies. I have yarn, fabric and leather that I think I am never going to use. I also have a lot of patterns that never see the light of day. Realistically estimating the free time I am going to have for the DIY projects I have planned, and the fact that my sewing machine has been broken for over 6 months now, I donated most of my supplies, and cleaned out my upstairs area. Home decor Art and frames bought on impulse, sometimes even furniture. The side tables, that you can never have too many of. All these need to go.
