BAM Half Training: Good Runs, Bad Runs & A Vlog

Happy Friday!!

Since I am now officially training for a half marathon, I will be honest, it has taken over my brain a bit which means that there will be a lot of posts on my training process as it happens. Welcome to the transformation of a non-runner to a half marathoner.

…In the meantime there is training

Currently I am running 3 times a week, no more—no less. I run on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday Mornings. I don’t run during my lunch break because I am not a fan of the dreadmill and I do not run after work because it’s usually too hot and I will find every excuse in the world not to do it.

I get up early in the morning (4:50am) to make sure I can run then come home so that my husband and I can get the kids ready and out the door. Most days waking up at that hour is brutal—okay okay—ALL days waking at that hour is brutal. When the alarm goes off I hear my soul cry, asking WHY NELLIE? WHY?

I have officially been training and running outdoors for exactly 4 weeks. It has been a serious adjustment process to both running on pavement AND running early in the morning—both things I have never done before. I must say though, I get it. I actually like running with the wind in my face, I like pushing myself to go around the track just one more time. I also love discovering parts of my own neighborhood I didn’t even know existed. What don’t I like however? Humidity—and the difference showed itself in this weeks run.

Tuesday—GOOD, Thursday—NOT SO GOOD

On Tuesday morning I woke up to the sound of the alarm and I was literally sick to my stomach. I did not want to run. EVERYTHING inside of me was begging for rest, but since I had stuck to the plan I figured I would have to at least try.

When I got out the door I was moving at a really good pace, and before you knew it I was at one mile. Training only calls for two easy runs during the week with the long run being on the weekend. So when I arrived to the track and was still moving pretty easily I knew I was having a really great training run. For the first time ever I ran 4 Miles on a weekday and I was very happy with the times of the miles considering my average between a 12 and 13 minute mile.

On Thursday I actually felt okay when I woke up but when I left the house it was still dark!

However once I started running, I knew this was going to be extra tough, the humidity was high, my legs were tight and honestly I spent a LOT of time walking. It was hard but it got done—another 4 miles except WAY slower!

Running In San Jose

As I write this I am on a plane to BlogHer 14 in California (my first time in Cali!!) and one of my awesome twitter friends found me a beautiful trail to run in beautiful San Jose. I have 5.5 miles on deck so I am anxious to get it done!

I shot a vlog about the crazy process of registering for my Disney Princess Half Marathon, Running on the Track and my upcoming 10k races!
