The Typewriter (Ch. 2)

Chapter 2
After what felt like forever going down flights and flights of steps, Thyst and I finally made it to the cafeteria. I had to stop and stare. The room was humongous, filled with chattering kids from what looked like ten to probably twenty. It made me think how old Thyst was. With his young skin and big blue eyes he didn't looked more that nineteen. He looked at me as I stared. His face twisted. “What?” he asked annoyed. Somehow, I just couldn't get my eyes off of him. And the more I stared at those deep blue eyes, the more I noticed something wasn't right. “Are you wearing contacts?” “You’re that fond of me?” he scoffed. I stood there baffled. “Thyst!” someone called out, stopping me from asking what he meant. Thyst and I eyes turned to the direction where the voice was coming from. A guy ran up to us. He was taller than Thyst and I and had a bigger smile than the both of us. “You guys took forever.” “Yea, she’s a slow one.” Thyst answered, walking away from the both of us towards the table. I just stared at the back of him, astonished that he had just left me with a stranger but it quickly went away. After all that just happened with him and me in this past hour or so, it seemed like he would always be like that. So I better get used to.
“So you’re Anberlin?” said the boy. I had to look up at him to see his face. If I had to I would have to probably jump to kiss him. Why am I thinking that?I just met the guy, I don’t even know his name. “Lin.” I said, not looking at him but where now did Thyst gone off to? “Cash.” He said. I snapped back into his direction. “Cash?” I asked highly confused. “Like cashmere.” “That’s my name.” he shrugged and smiled. “Who names their child Cashmere?” I mumbled to the floor. “Who names their child Anberlin?” I looked up to find Cash’s face close to mind. He smelled like cinnamon and his dark grey eyes laughed at me. I blushed hard. “I better get going.” I said walking away. It was a stupid decision because I had no clue where I was going. Suddenly, catching my breath, a hard grabbed me by the wrist. “You don’t even know where he is.” It was true but I didn't want him to know that. A lot of the people here hair was dyed. Wiggling from his tight but gentle grip, I spoke: “I’ll find my way.” “Fine.” He said and walked in front of me. I stood there for a second, maybe even a minute or two before I followed him after finding out that he was heading towards where Thyst was. I felt so stupid. There, sitting around the circled table was Thyst, Rose, two other guys, sitting on either side of the two, and then Cash. One of the boys that I never saw before had red hair, green eyes, and a round young face while the other had blond hair, crimson eyes and sharp jaw line and cheek bones. I couldn't help but think that the red eyes boy was a vampire. He looked oddly like one. Sadly, as I felt, I had to sit next to Cash who wasn't a pain I supposed but I was not done with Thyst. He didn't even seem interested in me. In fact, I don’t think he even noticed me approach the table. His eyes were glued on the beautiful Rose. For a second my cheeks felt hot but it quickly diminished when I say that he didn't look like he was pleased talking to her. How could he not though. She was beautiful instead, a girl I would despised but she was too clingy on him. I looked around the cafeteria and saw that no one had food nor was there a place to retrieve food. “Where do we get our food?” I asked Cash. I looked at him for an answer but instead Thyst answered. “We don’t get out food.” He said his eyes playful but dark and his arm was wrapped around Rose’s waist as he spoke. “It gets served to us.” “What?” I said dumbfounded. Just before I could ask anything else, a loud horn played, almost piercing my ears. The group laughed as I jumped in feared, Thyst still staring at me with those eyes. I stared back, confused, curious yet afraid. There was something odd going on. “Dinner has been served.” Said the tall man in the corner of the cafeteria. He wore a tuxedo as well as all the other waiters that served our food. When a waiter arrived at our table, the thought of disgusting cafeteria food was out the picture and in came the mouthwatering chicken and a fresh looking salad on the side. I couldn't help but glance at Cash’s meal that had a large, almost the size of my head, Sloppy Joe. I had to stop myself from saying something. I checked the other people plates; everyone had a nice meal in front of them except for Thyst who dismissed his meal when it arrived. “You’re not hungry?” I asked. He shook his head, looked past me then deep into my eyes. “I got an errand to do.” He didn't seem fond of the errand, just like being with Rose. “What?” I asked but instead of answering my question, he rolled and eyes. “I had enough of cigarettes for today. Just eat.” I couldn't help no to listen to his word. The food on my plate was calling my name and I haven’t eaten all day if I can remember. I looked up, after stuffing a forkful of salad to find Thyst and two boys, who I never got their name, gone, leaving me with Cash and Rose. I was going to get her attention but she was too focused on someone behind me. Cash and I turned to find something I never even noticed when I walked in. It was large stage. How could I have not noticed it? It was big, wooden with crimson curtains on gold walls. “What’s going on?” I whispered after swallowing my meal. “The play.” Cash answered. “A play? What for?” “It’s for our Leader.” Rose said, admiring the stage, like it was Thyst. “You know Thystie is playing in it.” “Figures.” I mumbled. Now I knew why she looked like that. Cash musty of heard me because he laughed. I stared at him, his profile view was something to stare at. “I had to push him to do the play. I knew the he was right for the job, all I had to do was dye his hair and put some contacts in it and he looked just like him.” She giggled at the thought of it. “You really dyed his hair?” Cash was shocked when he heard it. Rose made a face similar to someone pushing away sickening food. “It’s temporary. It all will come out in the wash.” “I bet he would be pleased.” Cashed remarked but Rose didn't bother to listen. She was squealing in her seat waiting for Thyst to come out behind the curtains.” “Who’s our leader?” I asked. “The one who founded this place.” “This prison?” “I don’t think prison food is that good like you just showed us.” I couldn't help but blush. I was eating down the meal like it was my last. “What’s his name?” I was curious. “Do we just call him Leader of what?” “No one knows his real name expect for the Elite.” He didn't bother to look at me when he spoke. His eyes were fixed everywhere in the room. I couldn't keep up with his looks so I gave up. “You’re not an Elite?” “My test is tomorrow. But even so, the Elite are not allowed to spread his name.” “Why not?” “No one knows.” “Is he coming down?” Cash shook his head. “He never shows his face.” “So how would he see it?” “He doesn't.” “What?” “Do you see that guy over there?” Cash pointed to the far right of the cafeteria where stood a scrawny man in a suit, holding a book in which he was writing in. “He tells him how much effort and fun was put in it.” “Why does it matter?” I asked. It didn't make any sense. If our leader didn't see it then why are the notes so important? “The play isn't for the Leader. Its for the kids staying here to have a good time. Our leader wanted it.” “Does he punish us if we don’t do it right?” “No. he will reward you if you do. Leave you alone if you don’t. Don’t worry it’s not a big deal. Rose just has a crush on the Leader so she says its all for him.” “That is not true!” Rose blurted behind us, her face beat red. “My heart goes out to Thystie.” “That’s because you can get really close to him. Not to our Leader.” Rose scoffed, flipping her white hair behind her. “Please, if I wanted him. I could have him.” “Yea okay?” Cash muttered soon before laughing. “Are you part of the Elite as well?” I asked. “I’m greater than that?” Rose smirked as she spoke. “How?” But I didn't get an answer. “Shh. The play’s starting.” I turned back around to the stage. The walls around us dimmed and the lighted pointed to the walkways where Thyst came out. “Hear ye! Hear ye!” he yelled, enthusiastically. I was surprised to see him like that. And so was Cash who burst out into hysterical laughter. This scene didn't seem to fit with the character I recently saw. “I am your host for tonight so welcome.” His voice went dark as well as the lights around him. My heart fluttered, afraid of what will pop out. All the lights went dark. No one could see. Breathes were taken but no screams or cries were made. No noise was made but Thyst's voice in the darkness.
“Welcome all.”
