Pretty and popular track star Marijke Monti is confident about almost everything – she’s got great friends, a great family, and she’s on her way to the State Track Championship. In fact, the only thing Marijke isn’t confident about is her relationship with Tommy Lawson.
Lily Spencer has spent her entire high school career preparing for the future – she’s participated in every extracurricular activity and volunteer committee she could. But, at home, she watches her mother go on date after date with dud-dudes, still searching for “the one.” Lily realizes that she’s about to graduate and still hasn’t even had a boyfriend.
While they live on each other’s periphery at school, Lily and Marijke never seemed to have much in common; but, after a coincidental meeting at the movie theater, Lily gets an idea – why can’t life be like a movie? Why can’t they set up their perfect romantic situations, just in time for their senior prom, using movie techniques?
Once the girls come up with the perfect plans, they commit themselves to being secret cohorts and, just like in the movies, drama ensues.

Just Like the movies follows two young girls, Lily Spencer and Marijke Monti (Yeah I have no idea how to pronounce that either so I called her Mari in my head) Lily is quiet, shy, and more reserved where Mari is popular, track star, and more used to be center of attention. The two girls meet and get to talking and realize they are both having "boy trouble". Mari has a boyfriend who doesn't seem to realize what he has in front of him where Lily loves a boy (Joe) who doesn't even know she's alive. They come up with the idea to watch the most romantic movies and take ideas from each one and use it to make the boys fall in love with them.
Such a cute concept. I really enjoyed this story so much, my biggest problem was with Mari's character. I loved Lily so much she was cute she came out of her shell we just got to see so much character growth from her. Mari was I just don't know how to explain. I was not a fan of her, I actually didn't like her at all and I felt Lily should have had a better character playing her friend, but that is just my opinion. I really enjoyed Joe's character This might be a bit spoilery, but I was REALLY hoping he would have given Lily the Grand Gesture I felt she deserved. But either way I still loved them as characters and such. Mari's boyfriend (I disliked him so much I can't even think of his name) Tommy I think it is, got on my nerves. I just disliked everything about him and even though I wasn't a fan of Mari, I felt she could do so much better than some boy who stand her up more times than not and flirts with every girl in sight.
Just Like The Movies is told in duel POV which I really enjoy, but at times I don't feel like it was well executed. I had to go back MANY times to figure out who I was reading from. Not because they characters weren't well developed because they were. It was more because even in say Mari's POV we still had some of Lily's thoughts so I was like, uhhhh am I reading Lily or Mari and I would flip back through.
All in all it really is a cute and quick summer read. I would recommend this to friends, but only my friends who are hopeless romantics who enjoy YA romances.
